What happens if two tires are not the same tread?

I popped my rear tire today. I wanna get a new one, but my friend says I should get two since the two tires in the back should be same tread.

My car is a 89 corolla, and I don't really care about ride or comfort, it's just a beater that gets me from A to B. Do I have to get two???

You should get two new tires in that case. It may screw up anything from your gas milieage to actual safety. Hell to cover their ass the tire store may refuse to only sell and put one tire on.

For a beater the tread style should not matter. Just ensure that the tire sizes are the same on the same axle.

Size is what matters, tread is really not an issue.

Size and tread is an issue. having tires that are worn differently causes them to become uneven and add a great ware to them.

if they are the same rated speed and size, you should be fine. If they are different rated speeds, then don't go speeding over 100 and slamming on the brakes😉

Agreed, tread isn't nearly as important as size on a beater
You should be able to get a tire from a wrecker with most of its tread cheap

it's important to have the same type of tire... -not necessarily brand or tread though.

(don't mix radials with bias tires)

I did that once and my car drifted all over the place... very difficult to control the car on certain types of road surfaces. (particularly grooved pavement)
