what happens if pluto and neptune hit each other?

Boom.

Their orbits overlap, but I doubt that they would ever collide. If they did, they would probably get knocked off the orbit of the sun and off into the endless nothing of space.

well there sill be a huge explosion. pluto being smaller will be demolished. creating billions of new asteroids. thus causeing a prob for us

Don't believe they'll ever collide...if they would then we would know by now by simple calculations. (well maybe not that simple) I think it would be more like a Splat.

it would be quite a hit.. the shockwave and projectiles of huge clusters would hit earth and end mankind as we know it.

I knew Neptune would own Pluto

though on a flat piece of paper their orbits seem to cross, Pluto is actually not on the same plane of orbit that neptune is..Pluto isn't even bigger than Triton, Neptune's largest moon...in fact, Pluto may well have once been one of Neptune's moons...

YOu people do realize that the planets in our solar system do not orbit on any kind of horozontal plane, right? Their orbits look like they overlapp when you arrange the planets on a horizontal plane, like we are used to seeing them, but in real life they don't.

If their orbits do not intersect, how could they?

Couple of things:

1. I don't think they'd ever actually collide. It's actually a very rare event to have two objects hit each other in space. They'd most likely just whip around each other and Neptune would continue on it's merry way after flinging Pluto way the hell out of the solar system (or possibly further in).

2. Remember that comet that crashed into Jupiter? It'd be sorta like that. Pluto would just get swallowed up. Neptune doesn't have a solid surface as far as we can tell. It's just a mass of gas that gets denser and denser until it turns to liquid. It'd be quite the show for astronomers though.

the do intersect. look it up. but they are not flat. the declinations of teh planets orbits are different. but the orbits still cross each other. it doesent matter the orentation if they cross they cross.

also if pluto got close enough to neptune it could just jump orbit and become a moon or crash into neptune

I'll put $10 on Pluto. I believe Pluto is just a small planet waiting to cause massive devastation.

Pluto pwnz Neptune!

They come close enough that their mutual gravitational attraction could fux0r up their orbits... pluto's drastically.

And all the planets are in the same plane, with the only exception being pluto. Even then, it's orbit isn't tilted that much.

Okay, okay...

Bruce Lee + Pluto vs. Neptune + Coke

Who would win?

I wouldn't count out Pluto. Neptune has crappy defense, and Pluto's small enough to slip in a preemptive strike without much notice. In the end, I'm betting it'll all come down to the ref's decisions.

And there you have it...straight from Carl Sagan Jr.

actually, Pluto is the only "planet" that isn't on pretty much the same horizontal plane as the Earth...remember, the formation of planets was likely caused by a spinning disk at the center, and the material that spun off of the disc would have been on one plane....
