What happens if I put a p3 1.1Ghz cpu in a mobo that supports up to 1.0ghz?

What core and bus speed is the 1.1? What make and model is the motherboard you're using?

If the 1.1 is tualatin core, then you probably are out of luck.

I think the coppermine p3 only went up to 1ghz anyway, but celerons went up to 1.1ghz.

If the chip has a large metal heatspreader on top, then its probably a Tualatin, whereas an exposed core would be copermine.

Give us a bit more info and we'll problaby be able to help more. :)

It's got the exposed core. No large metal heatspreader. Just the small little square about a half inch by half inch or thereabouts

It MIGHT work. If not, I don't think there will be any damage. It may also run at the wrong speed.

The chip should be fine then if its Coppermine. There's no reason it shouldn't support it.

Are you sure its a P3 and not a Celeron 1.1?

I thought the P3 1.13's on Coppermine were withdrawn as they had faults.

A closer look on the chip itself will tell you if its P3 or celeron and what bus speed it is, but as I said before, you should be ok.
