What happens if an off-duty cop sees you speeding?

I thought about this the other day while passing everyone in a hurry to get nowhere but anyways what if you pass an off-duty cop, obviously speeding? Does he take down your tag and call a buddy? Or get the tag and wait to find you again?

I'm pretty sure that a Police officer is fully able to write a summons and/or make an arrest even while officially off-duty, however pulling somone over in a private vehicle is another matter entirely. In addition unless you do somthing pretty serious (ie: hit & run) its very unlikely an off-duty cop will bother coming after you at all.

So OP ... what did you do to prompt asking this question ???

I don't do shit. I might call you a moron for driving like that, but I don't call anyone or take your plate.

Odds are, nothing. IF you're being dangerous, then he could always follow you, and give your license info to another cop via cell phone. In MOST jurisdictons, a cop is never truly "off duty." They always have the right to intercede in any criminal activity, and usually also have the responsibility to do so. A simple speeder doesn't generally come under that classification...but if he recognizes you as being a wanted criminal....then he's gonna come get ya...with back-up.

i just speed a lot. lots of 4 lane roads in the middle of no where here with a speed limit of 60 and i tend to hover around 75.

i don't think ANY off-duty officer is going to pursue anyone for 15mph over. Now, street racing... maybe, just because of the dangers involved for other people not participating.

Most on-duty cops don't even pull me over for doing that.

Writing citations is all about revenue generation. It's a crap job for cops, BUT if you do well at it, you can make promotions faster than other divisions. That said, no one likes writing tickets. And they certainly aren't going to do it on their time off.

I've had cops in unmarked vehicles flash their lights and pull up to my left and just wave me to slow down. Then they just drive off. I'm assuming they're off duty and I got lucky.

My ex was tailed by an off-duty police officer, while he called an on-duty police officer to come pull her over, for passing him at an "estimated 10mph over the speed limit." The ticket was held up in court.
