What happens if a car goes from neutral to reverse while traveling at 65 mph?

On a new car what would happen? Would the computer realize something is a bit screwed up and shut down?

Friend and I were trying to figure it out but really didnt want to test it. He said he once went from neutral to drive and the car stalled but still worked..

If you are able to force it into gear you can probably say good bye to the transmission, or at least the gear...

the most godawful noise made to man would occur?
i have no idea, im not a gearhead.
but i would imagine it was probably best left untested.

Well it's an automatic so you just push a lever a bit.

Its a safe bet the drive shaft, the gearbox, the clutch, and a few other things would be totally scr3wed...

Our van was thrown in park at about 45 when the tranny was getting rebuilt. The seals had not seated correctly and this heated them up real fast and it worked.

If its automatic I would imagine it would have a saftey mechanism to stop you being able to do that, i know on newer cars in this country they have, and if they dont the car will just stay in neutral...

You would hope, esp on the cars with electronically controlled auto trannies (aka dummyproof) that the engineers don't allow silly crap like that.

I know with most MBs and BMWs you can't even try it... you won't let you select reverse. Kinda like their traction control won't let you powerslide even when it's turned off.

I'm not too familiar with auto trannies but most manuals don't have a synchro for reverse so you'd prolly get "shrapnel tranny"

Around 15 years ago I was in my friends '79 Cutlass Calais, automatic transmission, going down a large hill. He put it in neutral to see how fast he could go while coasting. Probably got up to about 60mph before he put it in gear. We heard a huge clunk and and everythng went dead. I looked down and just yelled "R"!!!!!!! Which was my lame attempt to tell him he put in Reverse. He pulled off to the side of the road and luckily it restarted. He never had any transmission problems with it after that.
