What happens after the CMOS reset jumper is left on while the mobo is powered? Any permanent damage? Anybody done it?

As far as I know the way this works is that in normal position the battery is connected. In the reset position the battery is disconnected and the power line to the CMOS is grounded. As to what harm this could do if the mobo is powered up that way, I don't know.

Most BIOSes don't get far when they can't write to CMOS storage - which happens if you leave the jumper there. That doesn't do any permanent damage, unless there is a major screwup in the board's design. Haven't seen THAT yet.

it happened to me: on the a7n8x the cmos-clr jumper is close to the sata jumper so instead of disabling the sata 1 had it permanently on cmos-clr and then pulled the system apart trying to work out why it wouldnt post - at power-up all i got was all 3 lights on the keyboard flashing and intermittent beeps.

when it was corrected i have had no problems since [2months ago]

In my experience, nothing happens...no power, no fans, no lights. No response whatsover to power switch.

Thanks, all, for the input. I'm not as concerned now that I've been reassured it shouldn't have damaged anything.

I'm not sure how I made the mistake. (Then again I'm not sure how I make any of my mistakes. :) ) Doing more than one thing at a time I suppose. Resetting the CMOS was the main thing I wanted to do, though.

The mobo didn't behave much different after I rectified the jumper. However it doesn't do much but spin the fans and sit there, which is why I wanted to reset the CMOS.
