What happened to the service "messenger" ??

I remember having to disable it years ago every time i re-installed XP (which was a lot due to a faulty hdd) as there would be ad's constantly popping up. Did it get taken out? Did they fix it? I never hear of anyone talking about it.

If you have SP2 installed it gets disabled automatically.

If you want to turn it back on your have to do it manually.

They took until SP2 to disable it?!? Thats pretty horrible... what became of all the people that dont have the knowhow to turn it off or google for a solution... They would be stuck with ad's.

I just turned it back on there to see if ad's will still pop up, nothings happened yet.

I would think that if someone had random ads popping up on their system all the time, they might look into it.

I don't recall if they disabled it at some point before SP2 (since SP2 is largely just a compilation of earlier bugfixes, though there are some new things).

ISPs also tended to go after systems that were spamming Messenger popups over their networks.

If you're behind a NAT firewall, nothing will happen. There's no way for an external system to connect to you and actually send you a message.

I was thinkin on people like my parents, they would have no clue in hell how to stop a service, and probably couldnt use google to find out how as they wouldnt know what to type. They would ask me to fix it, or call the pc repair guy.

Yea looks like i am behind a firewall. Back when i had those popups i had 56k on AOL.
