Community service is not the same as prison.

No, they actually have prisoners do it around here.

I think chain gangs became less popular because it became easier to build roads with machines.

Come to NC and I'll show you some work gangs. Also, try Alabama. They actually have prison farms.

In Oklahoma, they do work with Public Service to clean up the roadsides, public sites, and do lawn work/maintenance. At the larger prisons the inmates do all the work, from staffing the cafeteria to growing food and working in a slaughterhouse.

here the county lock up has chain gangs. even the women have to do it. they also make em wear white and black stripes instead of the orange jumps. those orange jumpsuits are prison suits, not community service freebies.

they've moved to building furniture, answering 411 calls and other tasks they can do from the comfort of their prison

I have seen chain gangs before here in Tennessee, they were along the highway picking up trash, but def finitely not community service people because there were two guards with shotguns one at the front and one at the end of a ~20 person line of dudes in the orange jump suits.

All day long they work so hard
Till the sun is goin' down
Working on the highways and byways
And wearing, wearing a frown
You hear them moanin' their lives away
Then you hear somebody sa-ay

That's the sound of the men working on the chain ga-a-ang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
