Question What happened to the 6800XT?

I've been checking AMDs website for a 6800XT in stock at MSRP and I noticed they no longer have it listed. All they have is the 6750XT at $549 and the 6950XT at $1099 (still in stock). Nothing to compete with the 3070Ti or 3080.

Yields are too good. Not enough bad chips and they can sell all the 6900's that they make, so no need to downgrade a good chip.

There are still partner cards being sold on Newegg and such, and the prices are coming down a bit. There is a sapphire there for about $800. But it is true, they haven't come down to around $650 yet.

AMD probably is getting good yields and think they can milk the consumer for more money (hence the barely improved 6950 and 6750 cards).

Yet another important reminder never to be loyal to any company, they aren't your friend.

When I checked, they were at $850 - same price as some 3080 models. My biggest gripe is they only have 2 GPUs on their site, a 6750 at $549 and 6950 at $1099. I was looking for 3080/6800XT performance in the $650-$750 range,but the price I'm willing to pay is dropping the closer we get to next gen. Hope that makes sense - having a hard time getting more than an hour or two of sleep currently (RA).

There are certainly not many 6800 XT cards available. There are zero Nitro+ models. Maybe AMD diverted a bunch of chips to be used for the 6950 XT launch. Hopefully some of these nicer model 6800 XT start showing up again, and at MSRP.

The 6800 XT is gonzo. The 6750 XT is meant to replace it.

Edit: Looks like I got my models mixed up. But I wouldn't expect much 6800 or 6800 XT much further.

Not much point in making a cut down part that you will get $200 less for, especially when 3080s are still going for $900+ and the 6950XT MSRP is inline with it in terms of performance per dollar.

AMD doesn't want to make too many more Navi dies because they need the wafers for existing and upcoming 6nm parts.

I just saw this on the front page on slickdeals and remembered seeing this topic. B&H and Amazon both have it at $700. I'm not familiar with Sonnet though.

Not a bad deal, but like you said, I am not familiar with Sonnet, as there are many partner companies that may be more prevalent in Asia or Europe, that many Americans like myself have never seen or heard of. Also, I know nothing of their warranty support, which will also vary by region. This should be taken into account.

Sonnet used to make components for Macs, like CPU upgrade cards, disk drive adapters, etc. They used rather distinctive purple heatsinks:

Purple is still their color. Later they went into eGPU's, thunderbolt docks, etc.

This card is marketed for use in (their own) eGPU enclosures and Macs. It seems to be made by Powercolor and might be just a commissioned design.

I still have some Sonnet CPU upgrades in a box here someplace. I had a lot of their stuff, it was all very solid. But then, that was also like 18+ years ago.
