I hadn't checked Newzbin for a while, now it seems to be closed down, with no apparent means of joining. Anyone know wassup?

Interesting! That's new. I have an account I share with some friends... I'll see about getting an invite going for you.

Yes, It's still a few bucks/month, but well worth it.

A few weeks ago. Didn't you hear about the MPA letter they received ? No not the MPAA.

You may have noticed that if you logout, you now cannot see any of the site except a login page.

The reasons for this should be pretty obvious. From now on, if you're not logged in, you don't use any of Newzbin. This applies to both v2 and v3 sites.

You can still invite people if you like, but there is no indication on the front page (other than a "don't email us" bit) that anyone can get a new account.

The site should continue to work completely as normal once you're logged in.

Newzbin has today received a letter from the Motion Picture Association (MPA).
In the letter, they claim that some editors may be reporting material from Usenet that is infringing the copyright of their members.

While these claims have not been substantiated, it should be noted that Newzbin does not condone the distribution or indexing of such materials. We will immediately act to remove any items that are found to be infringing copyright.

Please take a moment to refer to our Terms and Conditions, in particular sections 4 and 4.2.

Please note that we may revoke privileges, or ban accounts, of users found to be violating these Terms and Conditions.

I'll send someone 5 bucks over paypal for an invite. 🙂

You do realize if someone invites a person and in return that person files a chargeback both accounts can be banned by newzbin. Most people are only inviting friends and family they actually know because of this. It is not worth losing your own account over. I talked to several friends who lost their account because of this.
