What happened to my Soyo K7VTA?

I've had my T-bird 900 running on a Soyo K7VTA for about 4 months until a week ago. I leave my computer on at night, but turn the monitor off. After getting up one morning, I turned on my monitor only to see nothing come on.

Thinking it locked up, I hit the reset button, and nothing would boot. The diagnostic said (it has voice doctor) something about some failure and electrostatic discharge. I can't understand the whole statement because of the cheap PC speaker, but I took it to a shop and they said the mobo was dead (CPU is still good).

So this computer was running fine until this one morning. The case was on, I hadn't touched the insides for weeks. You can't shock a mobo but the monitor can you? Anybody think it could have been something that I did to cause the failure, or was it just a freak thing. I have no idea if it failed in the middle of the night or when I turned the monitor on.

Also, any recommendations on my next mobo (I'm back to my k6-2 right now). I would like to get a KT133A and wouldn't mind another Soyo (always been good to me in the past), but I need something with an ISA slot for my modem.
