What happened to my refresh rate?

Ok this is strange,

I turned on my computer this morning and its stuck at 60hz refresh, regardless of what I put my display settings to. It will say that its running 85hz, 75hz, 100hz, whatever I set it to when I select it, but it still flickers like 60mhz regardless. The ONLY way I have found to make it run at what I like is to force it by using powerstrip, but that is not compatible with some of the games I play- causes IPF's and system reboots for some lame reason. Ive removed all drivers from my inf, reg keys, etc. and set it up as a standard display adapter then reloaded Detonator 23.11 along with loading the inf and color files for my monitor- all with no luck. Tried dxdiag.exe to override refresh rate in games but it does not. Tried it as a standard monitor @75h but thats just not right. I mean it used to work fine. I dont want to have to format over this small problem...

I know its not that big of a deal but low refresh rate gives me migraine headaches out the wazoo and any normal methods to fix this annoyance have failed. Ive gone in and edited my registry keys concerning refresh rate with no luck sofar. Just wondering if this is something that anyone else has experienced and found a fix for before I just get fed up and format c:

Heres my system specs:

Abit Be6-2 Mobo
Celeron 900@1211mhz (133) w/Alpha 88828-c (yes at cpu default FSB it still flickers) 🙂
Evga Geforce 2 Ti200 64mb DDR 5ns using 23.11 drivers
Viewsonic PS 790 Professional 19"
512mb Cas2 133ram (2x256)
SB Live! 5.1 Digital
IBM Deskstar 7200rpm 40GB ATA 100 (pri- C:, E: )
Maxtor 7200rpm 20GB ATA 66 (sec- D: )
Lian-Li Pc 70 Aluminum Case
Raidmax 420w continuous PS

Any possible fixes that any of you may know of would be very helpful.... Thanks in advance!!!

I had problems similar to this when I was running Windows98 (SE)

my monitor is a ViewSonic PF 790, and found that I needed:

For no apparent reason, the OS would no longer realize this was my monitor. ??? So when I noticed the flicker, my first response became to:

a. use add/remove programs to uninstall the ViewSonic drivers (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the drivers I use are not the ones from the CD, I went to the viewsonic website and got newer ones.

b. then I removed the monitor in device manager

c. on the next boot, I re-installed the viewsonic drivers, booted again, and then reset my refresh rate. (I did notice the 'auto' selection was ineffective and set it to 85Hz (I run my desktop at 1280 X 960 X 32))

Now that I am on XP, I have found that I have to use RivaTuner (a tweak program) to install a "60Hz fix" that will force my monitor to run at max supported refresh rate when an app. changes the resolution (such as 3DMark2001). I also have to use RivaTuner to turn off the VSync in D3D.

you can get RivaTuner here until Comcast kills my webspace

I have a ViewSonic PF790 too and if I turn the monitor on after the computer has booted then it does that for me too. I am running Win2K and I have to boot with the monitor on or I get stuck at 60Hz. Just boot with the monitor on and see if that fixes it.

I never turn off my monitor, so I must have been dealing with some other thing I messed up....

the good news, it hasn't happened anymore with XP

(the 60Hz when switching display modes is an Nvidia/XP thing and the "fix" has that taken care of.)

Glad ya got it nailed down

How funny....

I also have a Viewsonic A70, running Windows ME on my Celeron 333Mhz, and as soon as I noticed the 60Mhz refresh rate, I downloaded the most recent video and monitor drivers, booted in Safe Mode, removed the Viewsonic drivers and video card drivers, and restarted my computer. When windows "recognized the new hardware", I installed the new drivers from the folder I had put all the drivers in. And sure enough, it fixed the problem.

Funny as well, now I'm running Win XP Pro, and haven't had a problem at all.

And that's my story... My conclusion, maybe it's a monitor problem.

Xolus 😀
