What happened to MP3Pro?

wma, ogg, ac3, ra, liquid music, etc, etc, also all supposedly give more quality at a smaller size.

do you see any of THESE FORMATS on your friends' hard drives?

mp3 has had way too much publicity (in no small part to Napster) and therefore has way too much momentum. Not even the illegal anticompetitive tactics of a twice-convicted monopolist can dethrone mp3 at this point. (Although they are trying very very hard!)

Is there even any encoders for mp3 pro? I just searched Google and came up with only some demo cr@p... that also might be the reason.

The encoder within Nero features MP3Pro encoding capabilities.

Umm.. a feature in CD burning software and a cr@ppy limited demo, if that's really all they have to offer it'll never become as popular as mp3. Note the strong "if", those two were the only ones I found after 30mins of searching.

Well mp3pro is from Fraunhoffer and they are really stingy, they wont realase any encoder specs that people can make encoders off of. But the other thing is if u encode in mp3pro and play with a regular player then it will just sound like a bad mp3 thus people not knowing their mp3pro will discard them....its kinda tricky to introduce it in... Also Fraunoffer (sp) is really stingy and their licencing is a bitch they charge so damn much that companys who want to put mp3pro in their encoders will have a hard time affording it.

Anyone who wants a "better" codec than mp3 (higher quality and smaller filesize) chooses Ogg Vorbis.

Ogg Vorbis is free for personal or commercial use. (Windows Audio and mp3pro aren't.)

Ogg Vorbis is platform-agnostic. (Windows Audio and mp3pro aren't.)

Ogg Vorbis is Open Source. (Windows Audio and mp3pro aren't.)

All three formats are technically competitive.

Which one would YOU choose?
