What happened to Jeff Richards of SNL?

I know he got fired midseason. Lorne Michaels didn't think he was stealing the show enough (the reason I heard). It was a big controversy over on the saturday-night-live.com forums (which are down right now for whatever reason).
 
I think he stars in a Mazda commercial now (as the professor who only teaches class for a few seconds before running back outside to drive). Or at least that guy looks just like him.

Yeah, but it always does that, it will suck, then it will get better, then it will suck again. Its like a circle.
