What happened to DVD burner prices on NewEgg?

I remember buying several 20X IDE DVD burners (Lite-On brand) for around $23 with free shipping each.

Now, I check their DVD burner section, and the cheapest burner with free shipping is $50!

And the rest of their burners, they only have one for $25, all the rest are like $28 and up!

What's going on here. It's cheaper to buy DVD burners in-store at Microcenter ($25 for either 22X IDE or SATA) than it is to order them from Newegg.

Newegg is trying to shock you into buying now rather than put off your purchases.

Just my theory... 😉

Then buy elsewhere. No one is forcing you to buy from Newegg, despite the bitching and moaning that's going on in the X-25M whiners' thread. 😉

Um, there's nothing wrong with the customers of Newegg discussing complaints. The excessive bitching and moaning is yours, about their doing so.

It certainly looks like DVD burners at Newegg have taken a $5 jump over the prices a year ago. I took a quick look at Buy.com and they seem higher too.

General inflation? Prices in general on most imported items have been climbing over the last year. Can't print all that money without gold to back it up.

VirtualLarry I know exactly what you are talking about! 2-3 yrs ago I bought 4 DVD drives and they were ~$25 each for two top-end liteon SATA models and two samsung models.

Recently I went to buy another one and not only were the dvd burner specs about on-par with my existing drives (no real speed bumps to speak of) but the price for a sata burner of equivalent performance was now ~$35 (samsung drive), and the shipping was absurd. To buy a cheaper drive you'd find your shipping cost jump $10 all of sudden.

Its the same with their cables, you can buy a $3 cable and pay $4 shipping or buy a $7 cable with free shipping. All marketing shenanigans.

As for your OP I don't have any good rational for the price increases on the DVD drives. Unlike every other electronic gizmo they sell from HDDs to LCDs to ram the prices go down year over year, but these DVD burners have gone up. Don't think it is just your imagination. Maybe DVD burners are EOL'ing as the industry ramps Bluray burner production capacity? Just a shot in the dark.

Looks like I should have bought a new one when the prices were down. I was just looking at a DVD +/- burner a few months ago for $~20 free shipping and decided to put it off. O-well.

Actually ive been noticing this to and its not just happening in the US. They use to be $40~$50 NZD couple of years ago, and but they are up in the $80~100 region.

Just bought a Samsung DVD burner with LightScribe from ZZF. After the 20% Bing cashback, the rebate and the 5% that Penfed was giving on "back to school electronics" purchases from ZZF, the final total was $14.99. Not bad for a SATA DVD burner with LS.

I agree however that the prices of DVD burners are higher than they were last year.

probably just supply and demand. they'll come back down eventually.

probably an earthquake near a chinese laser factory or something. ;P

I sold my burner with LS to a friend thinking it would be simple to replace it. OOPS on my part. Now it's 2x as much at newegg.
