What happened to CloneCD?

It was pretty popular about a year ago and now it seems to be just another burning program.

Anyway, I downloaded v.4.0.1.10 a month ago and tried to copy my Chessmaster 8000 to test it out - didn't work. I'm hoping to find out if it's just that I didn't set the options right or has CloneCD really gone down the hole? I still have some old versions like v.2 and v.3 backed up somewhere -- should I use those instead of v4? Oh yeah, I use WindowsXP so I'm guessing v2 isn't compatible.

I have found that CloneCD v4 can't copy certain CDroms of my games. I don't think its a bug with the program or my hardware.

Anyway, it does copy some discs that v3 would not, so I don't think using an earlier would help.

I thought that CloneCD could make a copy of a disc, regardless of the type of "copy protection" used. Am I missing something?

Maximum pc has an article about copy protection and there was one type that couldn't be copied, can't remember the name of it. It didn't work on clone cd or some other program that they used with four different types of drives, lite on and one other were the best, they copied 3 of 4 copy protected cds. this one type they culd not get to copy.

I like to use Clony XXL with CloneCD

it will detect the copy protection used, and set up settings that will transfer over to CloneCd for "optimal" results

Yep, I just found out about this awhile back, it's better than Clony XL and it does all the work for you. :)

But in CloneCD 4, I didn't see any settings you could configure. I could only click write image, then it asks me what kind of discs I want to copy, I choose game and then it starts making the image file - it doesn't let me set any options like I could in v2 and v3. So what's happening there?

when you have the selections for whatever kind of disc's you want to create, if you use ClonyXXL along with that, you'll see the icon that is labed as "ClonyXXL".. along with the other icons; Game Cd, Audio CD, Data CD, etc...

If it detects your region as being in the U.S. it locks out the "Amplify Weak Sectors" option. Of course, there's NO way around that....

CloneCd currently can not copy the New Securom...version 4.8 and SD2 version 2.8
I would anticipate this will change when the author makes some new updates... Olli Kastl the author has slowed down the number of updates and has not advanced the program to deal with this new copy protection versions(there are several others that are not copyable but very uncommon)

Blindwrite can backup Securom 4.8 but not 1:1(can not install with a backup) and SD2 version 2.8

So what program (like Blindwrite, Clone, Nero, etc) is the overall best to use to copy games? And if it's Clone, what version would you recommend, that is also compatible with XP?

i'd recommend nero...i use it and its great

I use Nero as my main burning program, like data and audio CDs, but I haven't heard that Nero can successfully copy a lot of new games - if it can, what settings do I use?

Well I am not into copying my CDs. I did try to copy my WinXP Pro CD with Nero but the CD stops in the middle of installation. I have never tried it with anything else so I am just careful with the CD now not to scratch it. I am carelesss with my CDs and I have lost a few games because of wear and tear. I am surprised all my Xbox games still work since some of them are pretty scratched.
