What happened to Chevy Chase's career?

When all the smoke cleared, he just wasn't really ever that funny.

I think the invention of the character, Clark Griswold, was his demise.

Me and several friends ran into him a couple of months back in upper Manhattan after dinner. He was outside for a smoke and I couldn't even recognize him. He got old.
