Wow, what a change...for the worse. I never got around to buying the real game, but I have played the BF2 demo for hundreds of hours, and I really enjoyed playing it, no matter what was wrong with it technically. Naturally, I was pretty excited to download the BF2142 demo and give that a try. Man, was I in for a surprise.
I guess 2142 uses the same current engine as BF2 (with all the patches from the time the demo for BF2 was released until now), and the entire gameplay is much much worse. Now, more than ever, being without a vehicle is suicide in the utmost!
The first thing I noticed was sprinting. There seems to be a delay between the time I double tap W or hold Shift until I actually start running. This really hurts the immersion of the game. When I try to move a certain way, I expect it to happen instantly -- not after some delay. Later, I was trying to kill some guy on foot, so after going behind some cover and waiting until he came closer, I jumped out and pulled the trigger, but...NOTHING! I can't shoot while jumping?! WTF is this s***?!
Finally, I noticed that there is a considerable delay when switching between the various stand, crouch, and prone modes, so that kills the fun of avoiding vehicle fire and makes it very difficult. Also, I'm not sure if I noticed this or not, but can you still go prone while in the air or not? I wasn't sure if it worked or not when I was running away from a Walker...
Jeez...It's hard to believe I was actually going to buy BF2. If I do end up buying that game, I'd like to know if I can roll it back to an earlier patch, and if there are still servers for the older patches first. Can anyone tell me?
EA and DICE have really screwed up Battlefield. It seems that they just did whatever they could to make everyone perform equally, so good players are limited enough until they are equal to bad players. Great way to balance a game, idiots!
