I remember as a child, watching Cartoon Network & Nickelodeon which had many good shows, including Are you afraid of the dark, Pete & Pete, Superfriends, Tom & Jerry, Gotham Knight Batman, Superman, Pirates of the Dark Water, and nowadays when I get a glimpse of Cartoon Network as my brother is watching, I see shows like Ed, Edd, & Eddie & that crappy new version of Yu-Gi Oh...

WTF happened to all the good cartoon shows? Why were they cancelled?

..

Yeah, Nicktoons shows all of the above except Doug. They also play Angry Beavers and Invader Zim...

I wish Noggin would still play Pete and Pete, that is a quality show.

Actually, being a big nerd, new shos like Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, and Dexter's Laboratory are pretty good.
Like someone else mentioned, could anyone imagine a cartoon lineup 10 years ago like Adult Swim? And whatabout Family Guy/Futurama/South Park/etc.?

I think y'all are a little blinded by nostalgia, and very whiny.

The other day someone told me that the downfall of cartoons was caused by Saved by the Bell.

Cable happened. The broadcast networks started competing with Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, both of which picked up increasing potential audiences as cable and dishes became ubiquitous, and eventually a point was hit where so many kids tuned out of the broadcast networks that it was more profitable to put in news programs(which were becoming more popular at the same time).

Of course, now things are just getting wacky. Some of the cable networks such as ABC Family(who airs what's the successor to Fox's cartoon block) are ditching their cartoons too and forming even more specialized channels. It's being distilled down to the point where you have 2 primary cartoon networks (Toon Disney vs. Cartoon Network) and 2 primary general kids networks that air cartoons and live action (Disney Channel vs. Nickelodeon). This means Nickelodeon is the 3rd party(both in the figurative sense and in the literal "we have fewer cartoons than everyone else" sense), and the only other significant cartoon group, 4kids(which buys a block of Fox to air their wares), is the odd-odd man out.

PS What the hell was up with our parents letting us watch Ren & Stimpy anyhow?:p
