I've been working 60 hour weeks for the past 8 months or so and don't recommend it. I live very far below my means and would love to go to a 30 hour a week job.

Something like the 3x12 one week and 4x12 next week would be great.

Yea that is what I did when I worked in Pharm. I worked the night shift so traffic was alwasy going to other way from me.

But not good to do if you are married and your SO does not work the same or similar type time. Seems like you have more time off but you lose at least 2 days from sleeping.

Pfft, 60 hours was norm for software development. 8 to 8 That was for coders and qa. Qa worked most weekends and when we went "agile", coders worked on weekends as well. Modern day slavery.

My work varies too much depend on customer orders, but I usually stay in the 40-50 hour work week. If we get rushed or behind I may put in a 60-70 hour week though. Its really random with cat.

Right now I do 40 plus every 3rd week I am on call 8pm-8am and all weekend.

I didn't realize we were considering being "on call" in the equation. I'm on call 24 x 5 most weeks and 24 x 7 in our summer busy season. I usually get several calls in the summer on the weekends.

If it results in me having to jump on a customer's system to fix an issue, it counts :)

I have worked salary previously. Hours where not to excessive however the company I work for is fairly good about being fair and is into work/life balance. I work in the IT field. A couple of years ago all the senior IT where switched from salary to hourly because of changes in the labor laws in CA. I get paid for stand-by time for on-call and get paid for every call out. I usually can count on a extra $1k a month in OT. It is nice to get paid for every hour worked.
