What happened in the fight between Villeneuve and Montoya?

I just got home and am watching the Qualifying session what I had my AIW tape. What's this I hear about Villeneuve being provoked by Montoya and then Villeneuve grabbing Montoya and giving him a good ol' Canadian beating? I've heard that Montoya isn't well liked in the F1 paddock but does anyone have any more substantial info than what I heard? All I know is that Williams' official stance is that their own driver should just grow up...which means they probably agreed with Villeneuve's actions to some extent.

So did you see me ? Just got back from the track. Had seats right on the start finish line. The end of qualifying was so cool. It was funny watching all the cars fight for position while they waited for permission to get back on the track.

Come to think of it, I think I did see an orange crab seated near the start/finish line Lucky! I've been searching for somebody to mail me some programs. I haven't finished watching Qualifying...right now it's red-flagged so I assume things will get interesting

Apparently Jacques "left no marks".

Nobody seems to be criticizing Villeneuve for criticizing Montoya. Seems like everyone from Eddie Irvine (definitely not Villeneuve's best friend) to, from what I've heard, Frank Williams (Montoya's boss) seems to think that Montoya is in the wrong.

I believe there is a good chance Montoya won't be at Williams next year. And no, he won't be at McLaren or Ferrari either. His stock seems to be going down.

I think you're right Handle. The fact that he crapped out of yet another race (and essentially took out Rubens with him) isn't a good sign for Montoya. The fanfare from his one commendable manoeuver this season in Brazil is really starting to fade. You look at Montoya, and then you look at Raikonnen and wonder how the heck somebody like Montoya can become a champion at CART and be outclassed by somebody with hardly any racing experience.

This was in the Journal De Montreal this morning.... apparently during the drivers meeting, Villeneuve accused Montoya of unsporting behavior and blocking and added that ".....if you try that once again, I'll put you in the fscking trees..." to which Montoya replied "...you're one to talk, you've already killed one person this season..." (refering to the Australian GP where Villeneuves wheel broke off and killed a track marshal) . Villeneuve jumped on Montoya and grabbed him by the throat. They were pulled apart by Charlie Whiting-safety directer.
When Villeneuve was asked wether it was true that this happened, he replied " why, do the marks still show on his (Montoya's) neck? He also added that it was not something that anybody should say to anyone under any circumstances. I agree..that was a low blow by Montoya. He appears to have a chip on his shoulder.

Montoya's one to talk. If it weren't for the fact that he gets into accidents all by himself he'd probably have killed a couple of people as well. That's a low blow if I've ever heard one.
