What happened in May Payne 1?

I'm just getting ready to play Max Payne 2, but never got around to finishing the first one. Can someone give me an overview of the storyline and plot of the first one?

Thanks

Ask the game: on the main menu, it has an item called "previously"(or something like that) which recaps MP1.

wife gets killed by V(a drug) using druggies, random killing. cop(payne) gets revenged. but gets setup as copkilla. payne killings escalate, to hoodlums to crime bosses, to the V manufacteres themselves. end of story. i think this is how it when, been awhile.

i honestly hated mp1...just couldn't finish it. i played it after mp2 which i loved so that might have had something to do with it.

but my 2 biggest gripes were:
1) how you would turn the corner and an enemy would immediately notice you and shoot you. they would have like a .02 nanosecond reaction time, which is just stupid.

2) the "nightmare" level - after walking around in slow motion through a maze for 10 minutes, and then almost getting through a stupid jump puzzle maze (that blood trail crap), i uninstalled the game. that level just totally killed my interest.

The maze levels did suck but the game ruled overall.

Max Payne is a wuss. Duke Nukem would bust a cap in his as$.

Serious what? Serious sam is a wannabe.
Serious Sam is a perfectly fine game: a cheap, light-hearted bloodbath of monster killing.
