what happened?? athlon xp1800 +ecs k7vta3

i was advised to change the cpu bus from 133 to 140... after doing so..and saving settings.. system booted up.. showing athlon xp1900+ checked windows system - cpu shows athlon xp1900 at 1.6gh (before showed athlon 1800 1.53) ..what happend?? is this overclockin already??? my memory is kingmax ddr333 .. any danger to what was advised to me??? thnks

is this overclockin already

Yes, increasing the front side bus speed is overclocking.

any danger to what was advised to me

As long as your have a decent heatsink/fan combo a fsb speed of 140 should be no problem. Monitor temps and stability to be sure. Generally its advisable to slowly increase the fsb and continually check for stability as opposed to jumping up in large increments.

can i go higher than 140??? by the way how do i monitor cpu temp? without having to reboot and check cpu temp??? tnks..so is this the safest way to o clok?? thnks..

You got a taste of the goodness thats overclocking and want more already............😀

Wonders if I should let him know about the time that it just won't boot anymore and whether to let him freak or not...........

At some point if you keep overclocking, your vcore will no longer be high enough to keep the processor stable and it will simply not boot anymore. This simply requires you clear your cmos (which on some nice motherboards, if you hold your INS key as you press the power button it will boot at default speed and let you either turn the fsb down or the voltage up).

You should monitor your temps in bios and if they start to get much over 60C, it is time for a new heatsink or to turn the overclock down.

You should also run a stability checking program. I personally like Prime95 to check on processor stability. If it errors then its not stable. It should be allowed to run 24hrs or at least overnight. If your stable then try a little higher, until it either doesn't boot, it has registry errors when it boots or it won't pass Prime95. A lot of people like to unlock the multiplier on their XP's and keep their fsb close to a known pci bus multiplier 100/133/166(only for a few boards) or there are some boards that allow you to lock the pci/agp bus so increasing the fsb (which in turn increase the pci/agp bus) doesn't cause corruption or crashing.

There is more to overclocking, but your in the right forum. You should do some reading.....😀

my mother board is nt really for overclocking..no other options for voltage, etc. since i have upped the cpu speed..what are othre things i can do to speed up pc?? another question?? which is better ? faster cpu? or larger memory???
