what happened at the beginning of the movie, "butterfly effect"?

There's a thread on this movie but i just have a specific question
I missed out about 10 minutes of the beginning of the movie

when I sat down, it was at the part with the girl's dad with the camera.... and it switched scenes right after that.

what happened at the beginning? people are talking about the chaos theory but I have no clue that they are tlaking about.

at the begining of the movie, the mother is fixing her car, she has to drop her son off (I Forget his name) at school. When she gets there, the black woman who is his teacher comes out to the car to get the boys mother to tell her she should see something.

What you end up seeing is the picture that he draws of him killing two people... which explains when he goes back in the movie later and stabs his hands when he's in the prison scene.
