8x,4x, and 2x are all backwards compatible with each other. If you put a 8x card in a 2x slot, the performance will be a little limited. There should be very little of a performance hit if you put a 8x card in a 4x slot.

I doubt it. But there are diffrent AGP voltages and if you put a higher/lower AGP card than is supposed to go there then you might fry your card/mobo. But they are pretty much idiot proof, they are notched so you cant physically put it into the slot if it is wrong or the voltage is not supported.

ok...if your mobo supports 8x cards(video) and your card(2x or 4x video) it will only run the card(video ..) at 2x/4x depending on the card(video)

if add an 8x video card in a motherboard that only supports 2x or a 4x video card the 8x video card (should have backwards compatability...check your motherboard's manual and the videocard's manual/website/manufacturer..as always YMMV ) will only run at 2x or 4x ...read the manufacturer's manuals for specifications

It'll probably blow up. I'm almost certain there's a voltage difference between 8X and 2X (maybe 1.5V to 3.3V, not sure). Also not sure about the 4X board. See what voltages it supports.

Just a note here....even if your 8x card is in a 4x slot...it really won't affect the performance...8x AGP is more of a marketing thing than an actual technological benifit at the moment.

Here's the deal plain and simple:

You plug an 8x card into a 4/2x board and it'll run at 4x unless you tell it to run at 2x or 1x (which'd be stupid).

You plug a 4x card into an 8x board and it'll run at 4x unless you tell it to run slower.
