What handguns do you recommend?

Interesting thread. I might be purchasing one some time too, but only for range shooting. I'll probably go to a range with a flat hourly fee and try out some that are mentioned here.

I like 22 long rifle Ruger myself. Prefer heavy non-tapered barrel with the target sights.

I recommend you try shooting a gun if you can before you buy it. Some double action pistols are hard to shoot with any acuracy.

If you want something more powerful try a 357 magnum or a 40 cal.

There is always a classic colt 45 or 38 six shooter.

The 38 is a good round with a lot of versatility. The 357 is really designed for higher loads.

Look at both the gun and the ammunition. If you have to buy the ammunition the cost of the ammo may be important. Some people are into loading their own ammo, but I just like to shoot targets. It is fun to try to hit a 50 yard target and find out you almost always miss. Some guns are more accurate because the trigger pull and action is easier. With the 22 I could shoot 100 rounds and have 90% within the #8 target ring.

HK Compact USP 9mm is hands down the best gun you'll ever own. The sig's trigger pull is too soft, and the glock's wierd double trigger action feels awkward IMHO.

What size do you want? (Full size, compact, subcompact?)

What caliber do you want?

Semi or revolver?

Will you use it exclusively for the range only?

Like a previous poster mentioned, you can't go from with Sig, HK, and Glock in terms of reliability...

Only if he likes gripping what feels like a 2x4 🙂

I have to disagree with that. The DA/SA or DAK triggers from Sig are the best feeling trigger I've ever felt aside from a Browning Buckmark. But, to each his own.

I go to the shooting range a lot and would rent firearms there. I was wondering what guns you guys think I should try out. I like the Baby Desert Eagle and the Glock 19C myself. What are your recommendations?

If you like those then get one. They are both excellent choices.

Edit-You might try a SIG or HK USP.

I love my CZ-85 (9mm), but it's hard to beat Glocks as a first / utility pistol. Glocks are easy to take care of, they're reliable, accurate, and they only do one thing when you pull the trigger. The downside is, they'll never be considered as sexy as another pistol. 🙂

For a first pistol, you should stick with a 9mm or a 45 (ACP or GAP). Since it's your first pistol, you'd might want to stay with ACP since you'll have to shoot a lot to get used to it, and GAP ammo is still cheaper.

Do not, DO NOT consider a power weapon like a .50 for your first weapon. You really need to get used to a normal weapon before you "graduate."

A real benefit of a Glock or a CZ is they're not expensive at all. No reason to waste a lot on your first weapon.

I prefer the 19C over the Baby Eagle. Feels better in my hands...

I think I'd like one of those, but not as my first.

Really, I think my next pistol will be a baby glock .357sig or .45GAP.

I have researched extensively and that will be my first pistol. It's accurate, durable, easy to maintain, 9mm (cheap bullets). It retails for about $500... not bad.

I have a Glock and an H&K USP Compact. Love them both. Would recommend either one.

What it really comes down to though is for you to try out as many as possible and pick the one that feels best for you.

I own two Taurus pistols, a .40 and .357 mag. They are very nice guns, imo, although the pull on the .40 is a bit longer than I like.
The .357 is excellent.
