Hi All,

Looking at upgrading my Matrox G400 32MB Graphics card....

I am currently running an ABIT KT7 with Athlon 700Mhz. I use it for both work (photoshop/web stuff) and games (UT and UT2 when it comes out)...

what is going to be the best card for the job?
I have seen this new AGP2...obviously the agp port is different on my KT7, so need to bare this in mind. And I do not want to spend more than £250/$300

Thanks guys...a list with ROUGH prices would be excellant!!

Sorry forgot to say. Geforce 3 Ti200. If the Geforce 4 Ti4200 is good and under $200 then I may go that route.

i would recommend the ati 8500 retail for 138.00 off pricewatch.com as best value for the money and very nice features;)

My leadtek Geforce3 Ti200 is great. I got it for just under $200, but that was before the Geforce4's were out.

are the Geforce 4s AGP2? Different connection to my current matrox g400?

Are the Geforce chipsets the Indus. Standard now? or should I go for something else?

But the pictures I have seen of Geforce4s have 3 nicks in the card, whereas mine only has 2 nicks.

I am jugging the thought of either a Radeon 8500 or a GF3 Ti200

the Radeon would be a bit faster, but would it work as well as the NVidia? I know NVidia's drivers are rock solid.. but would swapping out my GTS to a Radeon 8500 work properly? I am trying to avoid a format this time.. I think switching to the GF3 using the latest detonators would be a pretty easy swap since the driver is already installed.. the prices are almost the same on both... hmm

Thats because its a 1.5v agp card. The ones with 2 nicks are 3.3v. Most new cards are of the 1.5v variety. SOme mobos, like my abit bl7 raid only take the 1.5v cards.

I'll second the recommendation for the GF3ti200 (I have the Visiontek.) It's a great bargain (I've seen it at shows for ~$130) and it'll handle just about anything out there without a prob. As for the GF4's, I'm waiting for the price to drop

the kt7 should be able to handle a 1.5V card, since it has a universal AGP connector, with support for 1x, 2x, or 4x AGP cards. some newer boards today will not support the older 1x or 2x cards that run on 3.3V....but the KT7 will accept a GF3 AGP 4x card with no trouble

Right, I have decided on GeForce... BUT its all a tad confusing....

Can anyone tell me the diff between TI and MX? apart from £100!!!

Would it be best to get a Geforce 3 TI with 64MB ram? or a Geforce4 MX with 64 MB ?

Help I is confused as they are very similar in price... difference of about £20?

Thanks

STAY AWAY, I repeat, STAY AWAY from the Geforce4 MX with 64 MB! It is mucho crapola! The GF3 will be MUCH faster and better. Really, do a search for the GF4 MX and you will see that no one will recommend this card. The GF3 ti200 or radeon 8500 will suit you just fine.

ok, stuff Geforce... what about this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Graphics_and_Video_56.html

Is the ATI Radeon 8500 64MB DDR worth another £60/$80 over the ATI Radeon 8500 LE 64MB DDR??

It seems the only extra your getting is another 25mhz on core processor speed and 50mhz on the memory speed....really worth the extra?]

or is a Geforce3 TI500 the best compared to either?....but they do seem rather expensive in comparison?

THANKS AGAIN PEOPLE!

Radeon 8500 Retail.

It's a friggin' steal right now. You are all but guaranteed 300/300 with stock cooling. Toss on some ramsinks and an orb, you are likely to do better.

GF3 Ti200 isn't a bad alternative, but with the GF4 Ti4200 just around the corner ... I'd hold off, at least, if you insist on nVidia. ATi has had some excellent driver sets lately (6043 and 6052, in particular).

Right last Question... is the xtra clock speed of Radeon 8500 worth £60 compared to Radeon 8500LE?

And will it fit ABIT KT7... sounds like it will?

Definately getting an 8500LE...stuff Gefore, way too expensive...EVEN the old Gefore3 TI!!!! thats over £300 here for the best speced one!!!!!

I reckon the 8500LE will hold its own put side by side against an GEFORCE3 anyway.

BUT

ATI and Hercules have merged...is the Hercules 8500LE any different to ATI 8500LE..

THANKS!!!!!!
