What graphics card for CoH2?

Hey guys,

Just putting together one of my old comps for one of my buddies and the only thing he's missing is a graphics card. Was wondering if someone might be able to suggest a decent video card that can play Company of Heroes 2 @ a resolution of 2560x1440 (He wants the same monitor as me haha).

He'll be pairing it with a C2D E6600, Asus P5W DH-Deluxe powered by a Seasonic 520W PS. He only cares about playing CoH2 (and is ok with playing it on medium settings) & is looking to spend roughly 140-175 CDN.

While I have seen a few pages of benchmarks (although most are of a CoH2 beta build), I'm looking to see if anyone here has firsthand experience and can give a good suggestion as I know pretty much next to nothing about previous gen. It looks like the cards around that price point are the 7770, 7790, 7850, GTX650/650Ti? I do know my old 5850 can play CoH2 reasonably at low settings at that resolution and I'm assuming that any of those cards I named previously beat it?

Thanks in advance,
DS

Hmm. Why would the E6600 not work? Min requirements for CoH2 are a E4400 2.2Ghz.

He's not looking for super smooth everything on AA gaming. He's looking for a video card that will make it work and not be fully bottlenecked by the CPU. As far as I can tell the game is more GPU dependent as swapping video cards on my old Q9450 yielded decent gains.

Short story is that he's going to be using this to play CoH2 (and only CoH2), and is looking to get something in that aforementioned price range in my first post (so 7700/7790/GTX650Ti?). This is the only game he will be playing (besides doing work in Office) so does anyone have any experience with how any of those cards run CoH2 or suggestions?

He can deal with 24fps in-game and post-processing turned off if that's what it's going to get (same with lowering the res), but he just wants to play so I'm trying to see if I can find him a card that's not going to be too bad of a match. As for the used card suggestion, that's a great idea so I'll look around.

I know full well how far behind the E6600 is nowadays :)

I guess I might try putting in my old 5850 tomorrow and see how it runs on low just to gauge things :|

This is one of the most demanding games out right now. Even at only Medium Settings for your stated resolution, you'd need at minimum an HD7950 Boost / V2 to just hit 30 fps:

That C2D CPU is absolutely worthless for this game. You won't even hit 25 fps:

You should never look at a game's minimum requirements. They are often so far off the mark because if a game runs at 20-25 fps, the developer might consider that "playable".

You need a new CPU. CoH2 is a CPU bound game and yours is woefully inadequate. Your first upgrade should be from the 2006 C2D to something recent, such as a 4670k...

Adding a new GPU to your existing system doesn't remove the CPU bottleneck - which as it turns out, CPU is far more important to CoH2 than the GPU.

Get an i5 and a 7950 and you're set for smooth gameplay at low settings. Might be able to find used 2500K+motherboard+RAM for a decent price. Dunno how many 7950's there are available used as it's still a current gen card

In fact, they always do that, no exceptions. And it's not necessarily the developer that decides what the requirements are, it could be the publisher - and it's in their best interests to market the game to as wide a range of systems as possible

CoH2 is the most demanding game I have ever played. There are a LOT of surprised gamers that expected their higher end rigs to tear through this game, but it ain't happening. When even a Titan can't crack 50 fps, you know you have problems.

My i5@4.1/GTX580 runs the game adequately @ 1440x900. An i5 with a 7950 is the cheapest route to playable framerates, but it won't be very cheap for just this one game either.
