What good multiplayer games are there for a single computer?

My 36 TV can kick out some resolution higher than 800*600. So I decided time to build a home theatre PC. But I also want to play some games on it with friends when they come over. What good games are there where I can hook up a few USB controllers and kick their arse? I do not have a console short of the original NES (top loader tho :D).

But yeah, every now and then I play some console games on their PS2's or XBox... but frankly I think their graphivs are the suk compared to my computer. Not to mention so much slower. Now I just want to build a good PC game libreary where we can all play.

Hmmmm, that's a tough one. I'm unaware of any recent games that take advantage (if there is an advantage) of two players at the same monitor. I would think sports games would be the exception, and maybe games like the Worms series which is turn based, but that's it. There may be more, but I'm not sure what is there.

Any of the console/PC sports games (such as the EA sports games including football, hockey, soccer, basketball...) should work provided you have the controllers to do so.

But yeah, PC games weren't exactly designed to have 4 players hunch around a screen most likely 19" or smaller and use their own section of a keyboard which would be the case since there is no standard controller like there is for consoles. I've got an XBox and have been able to use the controllers for the PC with either a simple mod or device and some drivers downloaded for the controllers to work, but I haven't really tried anything other than sports games.

I know the Need for Speed series has split-screen racing as we used to do with two MS Sidewinder gamepads daisy-chained together.

Also, I think the Colin McRae Rally series has split-screen racing.

Both are a blast to play, and should look and play fine on a 36" TV.

I heard somewhere once that there are decent emulators for N64, Playstation and Dreamcast.
Never seen them for sale anywhere, though ;)

Mame is a blast on the TV, tons of multiplayer games. As far as modern pc games with impressive graphics and multiplayer on a single comp goes, I can't think of one.
