I see all this hype about tons of people getting 75k a year with just a CCNA right out of highschool, but I don't buy it. It does happen, but not nearly as often as Cisco would like you to believe. It seems like almost every decent place want at least SOME experience, although the cert never hurts. If you're networking-inclined, you might want to consider just studying up on the Cisco specifics and taking the test. I got my CCNA by studying on my own, with about $100 worth of books. Took me about 1 1/2 months, but I had a couple years of networking behind me (no Cisco previously, though). If you've got the base knowledge and desire to do it, you could do it faster and cheaper than the classes.

<< but I don't buy it >>

I did, and I am d@mn glad I did! I am 21 and make more than the typical 4 year college grad, being MCSE,CCNA and CCNP has it's advantages. I passed all in one year's time out of high school, started at a small company then moved into the contract/consultation phase, then jumped into a larger company. Maybe those certs don't hold much weight in a small city, but I have saw them make a huge difference in larger ones.

Don't underrate yourself, if you screw around on here and also manage to get all the way through a CCNA cert course, I would think you probably do know a little other stuff at least.

I have more faith in the knowledge of 99% of the people here than I do 99% of the CCNA, CCEA, MSCE, MCSD, etc. that I talk to in the course of a day. :p

Go for it! You could be SUPERTECH!!!!!

The Cisco Certification is a two year course in my highschool, and I'm gonna take the first one next year. I plan on getting A+ this summer. I have no idea what I want to do, or if I even want to go to college, so if I don't decide on anything in a year or so, I guess I'm just gonna end up doing something in the tech field.

I'm hoping I'll be able to get a decent job right outta highschool with those qualifications, I'll have to find a job soon so I have experience too. I just hope I don't end up like JG or Windogg, an angry tech on the edge of sanity that somehow finds a way to make everyone laugh like morons whenever they tell a story.

ltk007:

I'm on the second year of that Cisco course that you are talking about. Its provided through a vocational school that I go to for half the day, in addition to high school. Its a good idea if your into networking, but its not a good class to get lazy in. You get out of it what you put in it, and if you mess around too much then your grades will suck. A cool thing about the certs through the high school program is that they often can count as credits at the local community college, if your looking to get an Associates or something like that.
I'm going for my MCSE also, I plan to be MCP/MCSE2k/CCNA around the time I get out of high school. I know it doesn't count as much as experience, but a leg-up can't hurt.

So can someone who took the course (either Cisco or Nortel) and is now out of high school explain how their lives are now?

First of all, Deicide is a little bitch who don't know his c*ck from his brothers asshole... But anyways, I am also in the Cisco class with him, and although I am not going to jump in and get as many certifications in High School that I can, like he said "It can't hurt."... I can say that I have learned a ton in the class, and I don't see why you couldn't get hired by a company if you have some certifications, such as MCSE, CCNA, TCP/IP or even A+ depending on the feild you wanna get into... But I have also been told by one of my teachers that he (who owns his own internet consulting company) would look heavily on whether or not you have the experience or not. But bottom line, I think that you can get a job with just CCNA, and some experience...

I know. It's amazing what is being offered in high school now a days.

When I was in high school, our keyboarding class was called Typing and was on electric typewriters. My first typing class was on a manual typewriter. Programming class was with a TI programmable calculator (can't remember the model). Never touched a computer until college and that was on a CP/M operating system.

Today's high school students really have some fine opportunities. Do yourself a favor and absorb everything that's offered. I'd love to take the Cisco courses at the local community college, but must go through an act of congress regarding the scheduling. No guarantee I can even get in because of the popularity of the courses.

beast: TCP/IP is a protocol, not a certification. Try trolling some other thread. (Beast is one of the 'slower' guys in the class, although we don't say that to his face, just laugh at him a lot).

Anyways, its kind of hard getting experience around here, since its such a small town and there really aren't any decent tech companies besides Corning Inc, but they only hire people with degrees. I wish I lived closer to a city where there are probably more places that will do apprenticeships and things like that
