What good are two PCI-Express slots in non-SLI boards?

I know you can make them SLI enabled via a mod, etc., but what was the manufacturer's purpose in releasing these non-SLI dual PCI-Express slot boards? Is there any way to use the second slot in non-SLI mode for a small bump in graphics performance?

Anyone know where to purchase an SLI bridge by itself?

I doubt that you could link the 2 unless it's SLI/Crossfire ready. My guess is that more products like modems, sound cards etc are on their way so mobo manufacturers made PCI-E X2 so 1 can be for your video card, and the other for ultra fast peripherals.

Makes sense - didn't think of that. What would those devices be? I haven't seen much along those lines except for server devices.
