other than to skim a piece of the government's budget and prominent tourist site? I say all these royal courts should've beeen obliterated a century ago. They serve very, very little purpose in a new world dominted by representative governments.

They are a tradition. Usually a part of a country's identity/culture. Monarchies don't have any power anymore, so it doesn't really matter if you change the system.

I mean, what would be the motivation behind obliterating them? None.

Marty is right though, what's the big deal on getting rid of(primarily European) Monarchies? If this question was posted a couple centuries ago we'd have an issue, but there's no need for this distraction(that's all it is) now.

well, they sort of act as a chief citizen of a country you could say. Chief citizen is one of the roles the president has to play... it also makes the people happy since they are used to it.
