I am fully expecting the worst out of our economy, and do not trust the banks at this point in time. The housing and credit bubbles that are starting to crash I believe are big enough there will be too many banks going bankrupt for FDIC to work, and also, USD may be the next toilet paper. Also, I expect the Euro will get severe inflation too, and the pound even more so.

What should I be transferring to?

When you say "you don't trust the banks" exactly what do you think is going to happen to them? If a bank fails and the FDIC will not cover you, assuming the assets you keep in any 1 institution are less than their coverage limits, then you (and all of us) are going to have more fundamental things to worry about than your bank deposits

How much money you talking? Not all banks do mortgages.

Buy pennies. Lots and lots of pennies. Millions of them. Then when the world runs out of copper in 20 years, melt all the pennies and sell the copper.

Or you could just not be an idiot and keep your money in the back. If you're really desperate to get it out of the bank, I have a paypal you could transfer the money too.

AFAIK, pennies are comprised of mostly Zinc.

EDIT: Or was it steel?

lol if the FDIC fails that means it's Armageddon

the USD's military backing and ability to pwn other countries makes it valuable and will never become toilet paper
