What gift should I get for a professor?

I need to get gifts for my professors to thank them for writing me a letter of rec. I don't know what to get. Any suggestions? One of them is the chair of a department so I don't want to get something cheap.

Thanks!

I think a nice pen or leathe wallet is always a good gift for a guy.

I'd really love a nice mechanical pencil but I can't find any good ones......

well if they're nerds, take em out drinkin and get em laid, otherwise buy em somethin nice for their desk...ie fancy paperweight, pen/pencil set, some sort of statue thang

You might want to ask an admin person in the department what the gifts policy is, before you spend on something fancy that the person can't legally accept.

Are you sure a gift is appropriate even if legal? If you're a good student and not too antisocial they should be happy to recommend you, and might feel a little uncomfortable about getting something "in return" even if that's not how you mean it.

Of course if gifts are expected at your school, then never mind -- how about Amazon gift certs?

umm...I don't think giving gifts to professors are illegal. I've already graduated so it's not like I'm taking their classes right now anyways. I'm getting gifts coz my friends who asked for letters before always gave gifts, so I suppose it is somewhat expected.

Well, I'm not going to get anything big, I'm thinking along the lines of some sort of stationery like nice pens and a nice card.

Mail them a gift certificate to some nice eating place in your town along with a card expressing your thanks and gradatude.

I don't want to get a gift certificate because it might send the message that my appreciation is worth an X amount. And candy is too generic. And it does need to be personal because I know my professors relatively well.
