Apparently Metallica isn't metal (wtf?) and all of us have got our genres wrong. Here are ten popular artists that just about every body must be familiar with. How would you classify them? Feel free to throw around words like 'post-modern neo-new-age pseudo-psycho-alternative gizmorgasmic rockabilly blues' if that's your thing.

1. Stevie Ray Vaughn
2. Alice in Chains
3. Aerosmith
4. Led Zeppelin
5. Black Sabbath
6. Rage Against the Machine
7. Metallica
8. Guns N' Roses
9. AC/DC
10. Tool

Metallica isn't metal? They are definitely a subcategory of metal, likely something along the lines of heavy metal or classic metal.

I might agree with most. I don't think Tool is Prog rock though...Rush, Yes, Dream Theater...they are Prog rock.

Metallica is tough to classify because they definitely made a change in their style with the Black album. But, I agree with you that before that they were thrash metal, one of the first.

I think Dream theater are more metal than Tool, but this is "splitting hairs" :p

The reason I give Tool a more rock edge is they have a sort of mainstream sound, even if the music is complex... DT on the other hand are full metal in a lot of songs

I do

While most of the time I think "as long as the music is good I dont give a damn which style it fits in", alot of people give a bad name to metal by saying they like Korn and Slipknot, and that pisses me off, as Im sure pisses off many fellow metalheads that work hard making good music only to be put into the same crowd as those bands

Sometimes realizing what genres music fits into helps someone realize their own tastes. Like if you classify all metal music as just "metal", you might like certain bands, but if you get into the subgenres, you might realize the only metal you like is power/epic metal and that explains why you have trouble getting into a lot of stuff, knowing this would help you find music you like quicker in the future.

Ah, I actually found a definition:

Epic Metal

Heavy metal with fantasy/warrior themes or an overall epic feel to the instruments. The term is usually associated with bands with musical connections to power metal. However, it is also applied to other heavy metal genres, most commonly early doom metal like Candlemass and Cirith Ungol, gothic metal like Tiamat and Therion, and viking metal like Finntroll and Turisas. - Wiki

The majority of the metal I enjoy falls under power metal, with random bands in other genres piquing my interest.

Yeah I dont like Epic metal because even plain Death metal can be epic in nature, plus most folk/viking metal is also very epic

But its true, when you are out to find music you like knowing genres is essential

Me, I happen to like nearly everything inside metal, except raw black or brutal death (lack of melody), then of course its a matter of the band being good enough :p

Not me. There's only 2 kinds of music: good music and bad music. Bad music is formulaic and trite, or most of what they play on the radio.

I don't get this whole difference between ROCK, METAL and ALTERNATIVE

I know what punk (green day & new found glory) and ska (no doubt & sublime) sounds like. Very distinguishable.

But can you cite the difference between above three?

I'm a huge fan of Opeth and Arch Enemy. What are they?

I know alternative has that whiny, grudge feel to it with no solos.
Rock is.... your classic sounding rock with many many solos?
Then what's metal? WTF is the different between HEAVY metal vs regular METAL?

As with the majority view, I thought growling was fucking hilarious when I heard them in metal. I was like, "you can't be serious." and would always LOL at this fake artificial 'trying to scare you' sound.

Now all I listen to is growl metal. Well not so much because of growling, but the super talented solos they usually come with.
