What "generation" of hardware is the PSP comparable to?

I'm trying to determine where the PSP fits in in terms of hardware capability. We know it can play PS1 games, so it has to at least be comparable to a PS1. However, I think the quality of the games go past PS1, almost into PS2-land. But then again it also has limited performance capability because of it's stature. Maybe a PS1.5?

I only ask because I'm trying to compare what features a developer may have to strip out of a cross-platform game to accommodate it on a PSP versus a current gen system.

I think it's between PS1 and PS2, but closer to PS2. It has graphics that are comparable to the PS2, but at a lower resolution. The PSP GTA games (Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories) were ported to the PS2, and I don't think they looked as good as the PS2 GTA games.

This is true. It's also a much smaller screen size, so the lower resolution looks pretty darned good. Most of the games I've played on PSP (borrowed one to play Crisis Core and Chains of Olympus from a friend) look like PS2 games to me.

PS 1.5

Of course it plays PS games. I'm currently reliving Syphon Filter 🙂 However, the resolution doesn't quite make it into the PS2 category.

Performance-wise it is on par with a PS2. The reason I don't think the graphics look as good though as a PS2 game are more storage capacity than performance. The developers need to use lower res textures since storage capacity for a game is capped at around 1.3 GB. PS2 games can go up to 8.5 GB. Plus why would a developer code a game to use a higher resolution when the system it's designed for can't show that level of detail?

I do see where people are coming from though as far as saying it's like a PS 1.5. I would say it's more like a PS 1.8. 😛

This.

Games like WipEout PurE look incredible and are under 300MB (storage did NOT limit it), *BUT* blow it up on a larger screen and the resolution suddenly looks terrible as does the previously impressive level of environmental detail.

It's about on par with dreamcast, so a fair bit behind ps2, but within the same generational level.

It is between PS1 and 2, but I think it is actually closer to PS1.

Compare any PSP game to GoW2, and there isn't any comparison really.

Compare RaD's GoW:CoO to GoWII. Ready at Dawn has pulled off some incredible feats on portable hardware and they aren't even the original devs.

God of War on PSP looks just as good as the PS2 version.. Gran Turismo 5 also looks just as good as GTA4 on PS2 in my opinion.

I haven't played any of the GoW games, so I'm trusting Google Image Search.

I think the PS2 version looks quite a bit better, especially the environments. Everything in the PSP version has very harsh, square edges because they used far fewer polygons for the models. In the picture where he's swinging the chain the walls and door look flat, because they are.

Well its possible those PS2 GoW shots are in 480p which could be why they look quite a bit better. I've played and finished all of the GoW's the PS2's even in standard resolution does look a bit better than the PSP but PSP still looks great. I would say its just a hair below PS2. PS1 was a good system back in the day but it shouldn't even be compared to PSP. It has piss poor graphics compared to PSP.

PSP I'd say is close if not equal to the early PS2 games, before devs got used to the hardware. They're definitely superior to the PS1 though.
