Moxy hotel opens Wednesday, welcoming 'fun hunters' to River North
http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifes...t-look-new-moxy-hotel-chicago-0520-story.html

On a wall above the bar, photos and selfies from fellow fun hunters who tag their Instagram posts #atthemoxy get streamed in a digital guestbook highlighting Moxy moments around the globe.

“Our happy hour is called Adulting Is Hard,” said Mastro, whose business card calls him captain, as opposed to general manager.

“We have lightboards with messages like ‘Need more beer’ and ‘Meet me in the lobby’ so guests can talk to each other,” he said.

The fitness center has your standard gym equipment along with some quirky twists, like a stationary vintage cruiser bike, canisters of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Starbursts in lieu of apples and bananas, and pink boxing gloves to wear while wailing on the punching bag.

Guests push a button on the retro phone in their room to hear a recorded bedtime story. Opt for a naughty or nice tale.

I want none of these things.

Here is what I want - a cheap AirBnB in a central location. Hotels will never be able to compete.

You skipped the important stuff (see below) and focussed on the fluff.
No bellhops, concierge desk or room service here. The idea is to provide a friendly but unobtrusive staff in a place that has the bones of a boutique hotel and the communal soul of a hostel — at a price that doesn’t bust the travel budget
Cheap, downtown, and good staff sounds great to me and I'm not a millennial. I could do without the fluff like the phone stories, but those don't cost the hotel a thing and I don't have to use that service.

Yep, I can carry my own bags, have a cell phone for directions and attractions, and have never ordered room service in my life. Cut those out and just give me a comfy bed in a clean hotel at a bit of a discount and I'm good. I'll air b&b when possible, but in some places (like downtown chicago or NYC) a hotel is just more convenient.

It also costs money.

Roomservice. One more thing us millennials are KILLING!

Paid $9 for a glass of OJ once, + tax/tip. But being able to wake up to fresh breakfast without leaving room = awesome.

We must be complete opposites on hotels. The last thing that I want is to spend any extra time in my hotel room. Breakfast is best on the beach, people watching on the streets of a historic city, on the top of a mountain watching the sunrise, or haggling with a baker who you can barely communicate with because your 20 Croatian Kuna bill (worth about $3 US) is far too big to buy your breakfast for two and they don't have change.

I can't imagine a reason that I'd want to be stuck in my hotel room.

have a hard night out, go back to hotel room. immediately send wife to shower while ordering room service. join wife, come out later to food. eat food, do stuff, pass out. wake up after sleeping in, order room service while taking another shower, get out and eat breakfast. then head to beach for pina coladas.

true hawaii story.

Got upgraded to a penthouse suite at a 5* hotel in Florence last week and we really didn't want to leave the room.

I'm with you on the bags. We walk with them for miles so the last 200ft to the elevator and then our room is no big deal. Add in the times I don't have small denominations of the local currency and uncertainty over local tipping expectations I just prefer to do it myself.

While in many hotels I don't think room service is worth the cost we have found it quite worthwhile a few times. Most of those revolve around major holidays when the easily accessible restaurants are either closed or booked solid. There also seems to be a growing trend of hotels offering set piece dinners in their restaurant on those days for even more inflated prices. The full room service menu is still available and can be more affordable than meals in the hotel restaurant.

Same for us when we got upgraded to the corner suite at the Fairmont Kea Lani. 1100sq ft top floor room with another 800sq ft wrap around balcony. Better view of the mountains at sunset than the beach and easier to enjoy wine and cheese to go with it.

To reiterate on the hotel thing, I just got back from my vacation in Italy and stayed at all 5*s and splurged heavily. People always ask why didn't I just AirBNB or stay somewhere cheaper cause you're going to be out in the city anyways. What they don't realize is that the hotel is apart of the city's and travel experience as well and not just to sleep. Been sending pictures around the office and everyone is blown away at some of the rooms I've gotten (which includes that penthouse). Having a room that's the size of your house where the bathroom itself is half the room is just amazing.
