What GeForceMX-series card would be on par with or above a GeForce2 32MB GTS?

Would a Geforce4 MX440 AGP 4X 64MB DDR Video Card have the same performance? if not, what would?

Im looking for something that costs about the same as my GTS card, whcih I got for $55 from newegg.com. Sadly, they dont sell them anymore so I need something similar or better for up to $70-$80.

The GF4 MX440 will most definitely solidly outperform the GF2 GTS, but outside of sheer speed and a vastly improved DVD playback implementation there isnt much else difference between the two in most respects.

Even the GF4 MX420 is reasonably comparable to the GTS, a bit slower in some cases a bit faster in others.

If you want to stay under $70 then the 64MB MX440's are pretty cheap and will definitely offer better performance then the GTS will.
If you have that $80 or so to spend then the 64MB R900 Pro is an attractive board, and clearly superior to the MX440 in most respects.

Great, thanks for the help and suggestions. The purchase is gonna be in a month or so, after I find out my PC situation and our new house's purchase and such. GTA3 Vice City is rumored to be released in January 2003 for the PC, so I wanna be repared for that also. :D

Like he said, the 440 will outperform the GTS. However, were I in your position, I'd spring a little more and get either a Ti200 or Radeon 8500LE. DirectX8 compatibilty, more speed, not too much more price.

;) Yup! The MX440 is solidly better than GF2GTS (esp a 32MB GTS) with hugely improved image quality, hw DVD playback, dual display (on some models) and slightly improved TVout/VIVO and AA. However technologicaly it is the same as a GF2. The Rad9000 doesn't quite cut it although isn't a bad alternative by any means, I'd suggest you pay a bit more for a Rad9000PRO or better still Rad8500LE if you can find one well priced. GF3 are decent 3D performers, well above GF2 and GF4MX but are lacking in the nmon-gaming areas, Rad9000PRO or Rad8500LE are better choices.

If you are looking for a decent Geforce 4 MX440 for a good price, newegg.com has the A-Open retail box version for just $55 shipped. Take a look here. I had an A-Open geforce 2 MX card and it worked very well and is still running great in a system I built for my in laws. I almost ordered one back when they were $109, but then found a deal on a couple of Geforce 3 Ti200's instead. I like the DirectX 8.0 support of the Geforce 3 cards, but for a budget fast card for older games, I would think the A-Open card for $55 shipped would be hard to beat.
