Only looking for PC games? As far as they go.. Peggle? Some of the other indie games on Steam might work? The Sims? What does she like to do? What genre might be "her thing" ?

Plants Vs Zombies, even if she's not a fan of Zombies, it's very cartoony and cute. Awesome game, I loved it and I'm a life long gamer. I can definitely see it appealing to somebody new to gaming.

Mass Effect lol... no? Hmmm...

Well, I just find it fun that people consider "gaming girls" as potential gamers who could only get involved in gaming with casual or Indie types of games... while it's certainly possible I always suggest something else. I don't know to be honest, still, there's so many games out there that could do it, or not. What about the Half-Life series starting maybe with H-L 2, or perhaps even TF2 with its Pixar'ish look, you know, something more... "punchy" as a first example of gaming, outside of Peggle or Bejeweled or things like that.

Some girls like trading-type PC games.

I think the're taken in by the idea of owning lots of money and property.

Team Fortress 2, have her play as a Medic. You play Heavy/Pyro/Soldier and work as a team.

Adventure games. I startrd with Myst and now play FSP's. Good adventure games: Longest Journey series, Syberia series. I like games with a good story line.
P.S. I am the wife of Runz.

Counter-Strike. It has a very friendly community that's extremely open to new players and will generally help them get started by providing helpful tips and adapting their own gameplay to accommodate the new player.

:D

On a more serious note, start out with "indie" and "arcade" games like Peggle, Bejeweled, etc. and several "sim" Facebook games like Farm Town, Fish World, etc. My girlfriend is absolutely addicted to the latter two.

Now I'm just working on getting her into FUN games, like Left 4 Dead. :p

Kinda crious, why does your girlfriend need to start playing games on the PC? The only game my wife plays on the PC is online Scrabble. I hate it. All those cheater words.

Get a laptop and find something with co-op. There is also consoles, perhaps just try one of the halo games on easy?

Games can be made much more fun with another player and can ease the experience by having someone to ask "what do I do?".

If your gf uses facebook, try her out on Sorority Life. It is a facebook app that my wife enjoys. My wife also enjoys Mario Kart on the Wii.

normally girls prefer Nintendo games, maybe get her to try some of those first. As far as PC games go, MMO games and simple shooters (nothing that has too much blood or gore) is good.

Any online multiplayer game that isn't too hard/competitive. Most MMOs, L4D, TF2 (easier classes like medic or engie), Enemy Territory.

Sims, anything with an interesting story (Dreamfall was a good suggestion), most MMO's.
