Not exactly. IIRC, the slow VRAM is similar in raw speed to 2133-2400MHz DDR3/4, but the 970 would have faster access to the 512MB pool because it wouldn't need to go over the PCIe bus.

So the slowdowns people experience when the card goes over 3.5GB is no different than the slowdowns of a 4GB card going over 4GB? (except for the fact that 4GB gives a lot more breathing room against it happening at all)

Kind of. The worry some people seem to have (including me) is that games will take memory if it's there, so they might expand over 3.5 GB more readily than they would if it were an actual 3.5 GB card.

I don't think it works that way.

If a game is utilizing 3.2gb of VRAM on a GTX 980, when you plug in an GTX 970 it's not suddenly going to be using more VRAM at the same graphics settings. The amount of memory usage should be exactly the same.

Somebody more qualified can probably give a more accurate answer.

Because the fan's ball bearings wear out as they are used. A GPU that runs at 40C with fans on vs. one that runs at 63C with fans off doesn't last any longer in material terms. Therefore, I am way more concerned about preserving the life of the fans, than worrying about pre-mature PCB, VRM, GPU death from running them at 60-65C vs. 40C.

For my Strix,i have my gpu set up for 45% fanspeed when i hit 35cel.Only time i ever hit that is the second i get a 10% or so load in a game and by then it pretty much doesn't drop.Non gaming usage its off and any game load its on basically which works fine.

Got a side 120mm,it helps pretty much keep idle temps in the 26-33cel range.

I hope to find out, as, I was JUST about to buy an XL2730Z when Newegg jacked it up from $599.99 to $799.99; if I get stuck paying that much I might go ROG Swift or XB270HU.

So, that leaves me interested in 970s -

Amazon has the XL2730Z for ~$639 shipped, if you're still interested in that monitor. Not eligible for Prime shipping though.

If Amazon makes it safe when you buy through Amazon but from non-Amazon sellers, I guess that's an option; though I usually just stick to Newegg and Amazon-filled for safety's sake.

In the meantime I'll consider B&H for when they get it back in stock -

It says it's in stock in 20 days. $599 vs. $769 for the ROG Swift from the same store is a big difference.

This guy reviewed/used both of these monitors and he didn't give ROP Swift any advantage despite in his country both of them priced at nearly 1400 New Zealand dollars.

Ok so I recently upgraded to 16 GB 2133 MHz RAM from 8 GB 1600 MHz and tried Shadow of Mordor with the latest updates and Nvidia drivers. I'd say that either the extra/faster RAM or driver optimizations helped because now the game plays very well at 1440p using Ultra textures. It's not 100% perfect but if a small hitch happens every 20 minutes then I'm perfectly fine with it.

So at the moment I would say I currently have no games that suffer from the VRAM issue.

Got my 970 in the mail today but unfortunately I need to send it right back because the screws I need to remove to install the backplate will not come off.
