What games have *GOOD* 3d Audio?

The only game I can think of where sound effects seemed properly positioned and softened over distance was Half-Life.

Apparently, quake 3 used to have support for 4.1 audio, but they took out support for it some time ago.

The new Command and Conquer Renegade demo supposedly has support for 4.1 audio, but it's impossible to tell if it does while I'm playing.

Does anyone know of any recent games that have good support for positional sound? Has it just sort of died out because it's too much work for software companies to mess with?

Personally, the sound effects, and especially the correst placement of them really adds to the gaming experience for me.

If you want a game in which you NEED good sound, try the Theif series. That game totally relied on positional audio, and Theif 2 isn't even that old. I'm not sure if there's a Their 3 coming, if it does it'll be a must buy, for sure. 🙂

Thief 3 is canned (Looking glass when belly-up a while ago)

Lander have 5.1 music, very cool IMO.

The EAX support is good in Operation Flashpoint.

Clive Barker's Undying also has good 3D sound, especially if you have a 5.1 speaker system. The audio alone can freak you out if you play alone in the dark!

Undying uses the unreal engine, so I guess that's the common denominator. The best 3d sound I've heard was on an a3d card (my dad's old crappy Dell system) in the Klingon Honor Guard game, also using the unreal engine.

Yeah, as far as I know Thief 3 is still in the works, being developed by Ion Storm alongside Deus Ex 2 and to be published by Eidos.

I just finished Max Payne and I thought it had great positional audio. There are a couple dream sequences where you have to almost blindly follow the cries of your wife and child to find your way through a dark maze. I don't know if I could have passed it without my 4-speaker setup.

Oki. last I checked T3 was canned, but considering Ion Storms history Im not sure Id say that T3 is in development... 🙂

Made it through Max Payne (carp game IMO) with a 2 speaker setup.

Ok, so it sounds like Unreal Tourney, the Thief games, and Max Payne all have good positional audio. I couldn't get into UT much after playing Q3 so much. The gameplay just seems too... stiff?

I could never really get into Max Payne much, either. I suppose I'm more of a multiplayer kinda guy than anything else. Thief sounds interesting. I've heard of the games, but never even tried them.

Oh, another question. Aren't unrea 2l and unreal tournament 2 both coming out this year? If they're just based on an updated version of the unreal engine, they should have kickass sound positioning, no? Here's hoping. I think I could get past my differences with the feel of the game if the new ones are as cool as they sound.

Any game based off the Unreal engine seems to have good 3d positioning. Operation Flashpoint has good utilisation of it too. Medal of Honour has none people. It merely mirrors the two front channels to the two rears. Try turning down your front sats (if you can) and listen to somone talking in front of you. Funnily enough it's just as loud in the rears as in the front. The 5.1 is just as bad. A pity really cos the sound is otherwise excellent.

FYI...Thief 3 is in developement. There are already some levels completed and the enemy AI is near completion. Not sure on a release date but I'd be surpised if it were this year.

Some people have no sense of humor. I happen to be three of them.

You happen to be three different people that have no sense of humour? :Q
You really have to teach me how to become 3 different people 😀

Back on topic, as has been said Thief 3 is still in development.

Thief 1 and 2 have BY FAR the best usage of 3D positional audio I have ever experienced, the level of immersion the audio in the Thief series provides is quite impressive.
Not to mention the games themselves are extremely good 🙂

I agree that Medal Of honor is great. After I beat the game, the sounds were still in my head.

Snipers hiting metal(Instead of your head) are really good for the spirits..

The gun noises are great..very realistic.

What is great is that you are out in the open alot, and you get to hear things in the distance...Wolfensstein isn;t bad, but only in CUeded sequesnces..

Medal of honor has it going on ALL THE TIME. YOu hear people walking in the smow of in the distance, dogs running quickly and grabbing you from behind..

ITs ALLLLLLL gooD....😀

Sound is not what I remeber it for but since it is based on the Thief engine I'll put in a word for one of the best games ever: System Shock 2!

Medal of Honor with a few files added supports EAX, A3D 1 and 2, Dolby Surround, etc.
It uses the Miles sound system, and the game didn't ship with anything but the software .dll. You can get the Miles hardware sound drivers elsewhere. This will be left as an exercise for the reader.

you can do that hack for MOH, but it screws up some of the sound effects too...I don't recommend it at all..
