The other end of that can be pretty hilarious too. The things I've heard :

vista breaks everything
customer : "Vista broke my computer. Every since that doggone vista came out my computer doesn't work"
me : "when did you upgrade to vista?"
customer : "Upgrade? you have to do it manually?"
I check system properties.. windows XP, no service packs...

And my favorite is the company I work for (small little company) recommends a us robotics external modem if you are going to use dial up to connect to our servers via the dial up system.
Me "Mam, you're going to need to get a US Robotics modem, it's the one we support and the one that works by far the best an-"
Her "DONT YOU DARE TRY TO SELL ME THAT PIECE OF SH-- MODEM YOUR COMPANY OR SOME COMPANY YOUR COMPANY OWNS MAKES, blahblahblahblah"...
her husband was nearby and said "I think US Robitics is a lot bigger than they are" but she told them to shutup and not buy into our crap.

Apparently solar power requires the atmosphere of the Earth to act as a magnifying lens or something.

Didn't they plan to get the power back by microwave?

I've an old Nat Geo copy with an article on that somewhere.

This post wins teh thread.

Yeah, I have heard plenty of people spreading misinformation, but I really don't take note of it, as that is what people do. If I am working directly with someone and need to correct them, then yeah, I do. However, I am not petty enough to make note of the most ridiculous/incorrect thing I have heard about a computer or an automobile. I will note, however, that the automotive forum here is carried by only a few members and the rest is just filler posts...

Back when memory speed was selected by nanoseconds, most people would choose 70 over 60.

And of course the big one - planes and treadmills.

A girl in an on-campus computer lab was trying to use a scanner in one of the four computer labs. She had her document in the scanner and was clicking the scan button, walking out of the computer lab, and standing in front of our main color laser printer. She tried this three times, and was very frustrated.

"Excuse me, this printer is out of toner."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course I sure, it says it on the display."
*Looks at display that reads "Ready"*
"It isn't out of toner."
"Then it is out of paper. Can you refill it."
"It isn't out of paper."
"Yes it is."
"No it isn't. What are you trying to do?"
"Copy my document."
"This is a printer, not a copier."
"I know, I have my document on the scanner in the other room."
*Walks to other room*
"See, it isn't working. I am trying to make a color copy!"
"Are you logged into the computer? Did you scan it or copy it using Adobe Acrobat or HP?"
"Logged in? No. Why would I be logged in? I just need a copy."

Keep in mind, this is a computer lab with ~200 computers, four rooms, one high capacity black and white laser printer per room, and one central high capacity color laser. She expected a USB scanner connected to a computer in one room to magically print to the color laser in the proctor room.

Most don't have VRAM anymore. They use DRAM.

My co-worker said "Well... it's a Bose, so you wouldn't think there would be static". The audio techs just blinked and stood in awe. I just walked away.

Background - We had put in a new wireless mic system in the council chambers and we were experiencing static.
