My E2160 runs at 3.2 all day long, it's paired with an HD4890 and it does okay at 1080p. I don't run benchmarks on it so I only know things are either "playable" or not. It will handle any Call of Duty game, not sure about BF3 etc.
Those cpu's were great overclockers, I would hope your E2180 would go higher than what it's at now?
I'd increase the amount of system memory to at least2 if not 4, they practically give the stuff away nowadays.

My friend RAM is very low price now. You can get 8GB kit for 30 to 45 dollars. Then save up and buy a SSD and you will see a HUGE performance increase on your comp. gl

I had the e2160 (it was great) but the lack of cache really crippled it for gaming. I saw huge increases moving to the i7 920, even at stock speeds compared to 3.2ghz on the e2160. Yes, the 920 had more cores, but this was for games that were only using 1-2 cores.

If it were 2006-2008, that chip would have made a nice gaming rig. These days, it can barely hold on, even overclocked to the max. Consider an entire platform upgrade, if you want to play the newest games. (Even the might Q6600 falters, compared to a 2500K.)

Def. upgrade your RAM though, if you only have 1GB.

1GB of ram? Really? My phone has more than that. But I'd say you need a whole new system and keep the 7770 to drop in it. DDR2 prices are high and your CPU will barely hold on to modern games even with 4GB of ram and an overclock.

Are you in the US? If so, consider buying used components. I've picked up e8400 cpus for $40 and 2x2GB DDR2 for $30 off eBay. Very easy/cheap to upgrade your system to a lot more power that way. (A stock e8400 is going to be faster than a hugely overclocked e2180.)

And a Ferrari is faster than a Banana... Seriously, could you get anymore apples and oranges than that comparison? The core count and cache isn't the only difference between those two processors. Yes, a top of the line (at it's time) Core i7 with triple channel memory is going to be faster than a previous generation Core 2 based CPU that was low end when it was brand new...

Let me post some numbers from Anandtech bench:

Each of these chips is 0.66GHz apart so the scaling on the benches should also be 0.66GHz apart. Any deviation is due to bus and cache (ie uncore). As you can see the uncore part has a HUGE impact on performance. Simple linear extrapolation suggest that a 2.0GHz penryn would score 36.7 on farcry, but the E2180 only scores 25. Ouch! This tells you that an E2180 needs to be 36.7/25 or a whopping 47% faster to equal a core 2 E8xxx series cpu in this game. For Left 4 Dead, it is 92.2/60, or 53%! Yes an E2180 needs to be clocked at 5.1 GHz just to equal the performance of an E8600 in that game. Other games are surely similar.

That is gruesome, and worst of all we know that the E8600 isnt even that fast of a gaming chip anymore....

The E3300 has 1M and the E5200 has 2M, other than that they are the same. That is a large difference for just 1 more megabyte of cache. Now imagine 6M.

Need to sell everything except the video card and start new. Not enough ram, to low end of a CPU even with overclocking for a lot of games. I wouldn't invest any money into that machine.

e2180 @ 3.0-3.2Ghz is about equal to a e6750 @ stock speeds for gaming. I had the e2140, e2160 , e2180 great cpu's for their day and O/C like champs.

A C2Q or a 8xxx dualie from the same time platform was MUCH faster for most games. That was at the same freq, using the same numbers as cores.

The e21xx series was fine for gaming for a short while, but was quickly taxed in modern games. I upgraded from the 3.2ghz e2160 and kept the same resolution and GPU and doubled my frame rates on the i7. Sure the memory probably helped, but the CPU was inferior to the 5xxx options, which was slower than the 8xxx CPUs.

I would NOT game with the e2xxx series unless you are only using it for 2007 and older titles or non-taxing games. The upgrade to a C2Q on the same platform is likely more expensive than it's worth. Get a cheap MB/CPU/RAM combo from intel/AMD for ~$200 and sell the old parts.

I'm not sure what you're replying to tbh... I'm not saying the e2xxx is good for gaming, far from it. I'm saying comparing it to an i7 920 and saying the 920 is so much faster isn't proving any useful info. I might as well compare it to my 3770 in that case. An i7 920 isn't a C2Q or a higher end C2D which is what you're comparing it to in this post, and that's understandable and provides a much better reference.

Buy more RAM for now and do a complete mb/cpu upgrade, when you can afford it

Btw, Far Cry 3 will be playable on your computer, even @ 2.7 Ghz, but you need at least 2 gigs of ram, otherwise expect continuous slowdowns.
