i want to ask a computer question , but i can't figure out which would be the correct one
this concerns deployment methods of desktop pc images, using powerquests imagecenter/deploycenter software (used to be called drive image pro), a program like ghost
but the real question isn't about using the software (thus, i don't think it belongs in the software-applications forum), my question is about how other large companies deploy the image files
we don't have a "real" WAN yet, we have hundreds of small isolated LAN's that have limited connectivity via modem, so downloading 600-900MB image files isn't an option
we have been using CD's, but are ready to move to a new method, many of the image files are to large to fit onto a single CD anymore and we have multiple platforms that have seperate image files, so the logistics and cost of sending out thousands of CD's has become a problem
one idea we are looking at is using snap servers, we can load all the images and ship these units (fairly small/cheap shipping) to the locations. on a given cycle (quarterly or semi-annual) , we can swap them out on a staggered schedule using a small pool of spare units
another idea is just moving from CD-ROM to DVD. main problem with this is that we have no DVD player/drives at these field locations, so we would have to either replace some CD drives in existing PC's or buy at least one new pc with a DVD player for each location. i don't like this method.
anybody know of another good option to deploy this amount of data to hundreds of locations? (we are talking about approximately 10 files ranging from 600-900MB , plus misc. files, so we are talking about ~8-10GB of data files)
thank you and if you can suggest a better place to post this than off-topic, i would appreciate it
