About the most selective I get when it comes to food is looking for chicken and pork that haven't been pumped full of "a 15% or higher solution of natural juices and flavors".

Otherwise, I buy whatever veggies and other produce is cheap.

Yeah, I guess I do look for that. I prefer to brine my own chicken & pork and not have it injected at the plant for me. :)

Honestly, I really only started paying attention to it when my wife was on a sodium restricted diet during her last few months of pregnancy. When you can only consume 1000mg of sodium a day, you have to cut corners wherever you can.

Some of those "natural juices and flavor" added chicken breasts and pork loins have 15%-20% of your daily sodium intake.

After grabbing cuts that were sodium free(or as close to it as possible) for 4 months I have trouble eating the injected stuff because it tastes like I'm licking a salt shaker. It just tastes too salty now.

o.o, yeah they can be kinda salty, but that makes it so darn tasty :(... curse our high salt American diets!

I buy as much as I can from the farmers market, food that is local, fresh and organic. That said, I also usually have a bag of frankenchicken in my fridge, and I'm still trying to wean myself over to buying local meats, instead of the $3 / lb pork loins. Pretty much have gotten onto local organic milk.

Organic is good, Local is better, and local pretty much means organic 90% of the time.

It depends. Sometimes I buy stuff at Whole Foods, other times I buy it at Giant Eagle, and sometimes I go to a great farmers market type deal...

I dunno, whatever's at Wal-Mart. I don't buy any organic, that I know of, though.

I've finally found a good source for bulk beef(oh yeah, I went there) and go in with some coworkers to score a 1/4 of a cow each year for a couple hundred bucks and get a moocow that was farm raised locally a few miles from my own house. It's cheaper, more convenient, and the t-bones are amazing.

I wish I was able to find something similar for pork and poultry.

And now that I think about it, when buying seafood, I try to look for ones marked "wild" and not "farm raised". Salmon especially. A good wild sockeye is lightyears better than the artificially colored farm raise chunk you buy in the freezer bags.

I don't buy GM foods, but to be honest I'm not sure I'e even seen any in my area.

I try to stick with Organic in general, but I'm not a nut about it.

Just a warning buddy... There will be a lot of people that answer they do not eat GM food. Problem is that they probably have no idea they are.

Something like 85% of Soybeans and 65% of Corn in the US are GM. Problem is that no one knows.

They probably don't realize that a lot of the meats are raised on GM corn and a good deal of dairy cows are fed GM soybeans.

You need to add option to poll for "whatever tastes best" b/c that's pretty much my guide.

Why is GM food such a big deal? We've been doing it for centuries by splicing different plants together. We just happen to do it on a more specific level.

You are my point exactly. Most people have no idea that their corn flakes are made from GM corn.

yeah that was part of the reason i did this, i was pretty sure many people didn't know, considering the US doesn't require labeling of GM products.

Some of the negatives:
I believe it's a big deal, considering the rise in organic food production. One category required for organic food is to contain less than some arbitrary number of GM product, which is difficult to control.

I thing there is also some study indicating that GM plants may out compete wild plants.

There are of course numerous positives to genetic modification.

Well all of the cereals I buy are Organic, aside from the occassional box of Sugar Crisp when I get bad craving for it. :D

In general I don't care too much, but I have noticed that many items I buy actually taste better as Organic than they do just normally, so all else being equal (or even slightly more expensive) I'll buy Organic.
