What fits my criteria?

GasX

I have a Ford Explorer and it is just too much truck and I want to trade it in for a new (used) vehicle. My criteria are:

Crossover SUV style vehicle
Seats 6+ (probably a 3rd row)
20 mpg+ highway
Available in model years 2004-2006

Anything other than a Honda Pilot or Acura MDX worth looking at?

Cross overs are really just hitting there stride. If you're wanting used from 2004-2006...then you're limiting your field greatly.

Can this wait a year or two and get a used CX-9, Highlander, or maybe even a GMC Acadia/Saturn Outlook? They are much better than previous generation cross overs.

The Ford Edge and CX-9 are awesome vehicles, but price wise would be tough. That and I am loathe to buy a new car and take the depreciation hit.

The recent birth of my second son brings the immediacy to the equation...

If you havent looked at the Cadillac SRX V6 I would suggest that. It has phenominal towing capacity with a 3rd row seat and gets better gas mileage than most others and uses regular octane fuel to boot. Incredible vehicle, we have one ourselves and have absolutely no regrets.

Wife and I have a Toyota Highlander. It's a V6 4WD and pulls around 21-22 on the Highway. She averages about 20MPG overall with some intown driving. It's comfortable, very easy to drive, has excellent visibility, and it's saftey ratings are excellent. Has a third row seating too, but it's more of a marketing gimmic than anything really useful.

FWIW - ours is a lease. It's a 2005 that will be up in May '07 and will have around 36k on the clock. Buyout of the lease is just under 18k. Just food for thought if you are looking at the going trade in rates of Highlanders.

Depending on your budget, you should really look at the Saturn Outlook if you can afford it. Incredible amount of car for the $$.

BMW X5

Won't have a 3rd row. Go drive the BMW X5 then go drive all the other crossovers. You'll give up the 3rd row.

My father has a Pilot. It's decent. IMO it's nowhere hear the quality of older (late 1980's and early 1990's) Hondas, but it has been decently reliable and it's comfortable to drive. The '04 Pilots had a transmission recall, so you'll want to make sure that work was performed if you are looking at an '04 Pilot.

Honestly, I liked the Explorers we had before much better than I like the Pilot, but that's a preference and the Pilot is a pretty nice vehicle.

As for mileage, I used to get 22-23 mpg on the freeway with our V8 Explorer, but averaged around 18 in mixed driving. The Pilot is averaging about 20 mpg in mixed driving.

Pretty gutless and the gas milage was quite a bit worse than advertised.

I see... The new Rav4 will fit. Decent mileage, option 3rd row and pretty nice inside.

chrysler pacifica. with chrysler depreciation standard, you'll probably be able to get a good deal on one.

What is their long term reliability like?
