Took my saws out today, brought them inside, and one leaked some fuel on a case of MREs. I'll need to see what's going on with that. Probably crud on on an Oring.

That's not the problem. The problem is I thought "Maybe I should buy more MREs", and went to amazon. I used to be big into them, and knew who the best maker was, but I can't remember anymore. The ones I have now are sopacko. The other choices are ameriqual, and wornick. Not sure which I should get, or if I should get any at all. Decision paralysis :^/

Get these!

They all crap now. Seriously, we used to get the halal versions because they were made with better quality ingredients. The manufacturers seem to have hired Koranic scholars to figure out what they could get away with while staying halal and even the halal ones are crap. There is a line of kosher not-MRE MREs that are still good. The only difference is that the outer packaging is transparent instead of tan. I’ll poke around and see if I can find them.

I hate all these BS fees. I pay more in those than in actual usage. At least with gas most of the bill is based on actual usage. I'm actually like $300 in the green right now because of the wood stove, so I'll probably end up getting no bills all summer. I suspect my rate will end up being under $100 next winter.

Most of my bills go up by at least $10/mo each year. Water bill is ridiculous now, it actually surpassed the gas bill. Up to $126/mo now. Used to be like $60 10 years ago.
Buy some more useless shit and stop comparing

Since you have failed at the modest task which was your charge... since you have failed to deliver my package... I have no choice but to... wait patiently and hope that you eventually deliver it.

I used to buy MREs but you need to get them "fresh." And even then, it's not like you have decades to use them. So either you stash them and forget or you manage to remember you have them and try to choke them down.

This was quite a while ago, so I'm hoping things have improved but I'm not anxious to find out.

If I were worried about being prepared for a disaster, I'd go with whatever had the longest shelf life. I haven't checked, but I would guess there have be food bars that have all of the calories and nutrients you need for one day. I'm sure they expire too, but even afterwards, they're probably still good enough that they won't kill you.

Really, I would consider potable water a bigger deal but that also expires eventually. But maybe that the same sort of "safety" expiration they put on things like dry fiber mixes, mineral oil, salt, etc.

For disaster preparedness, you don't need anything fancy. Just get *canned goods you normally like to eat. Cycle through them and replace in a timely manner. Might want to get some sterno, and build a small stove you can feed with small wood and trash.

I like MREs cause they're varied and fun. Easy to pack out for work or a hiking trip. Calorie dense, so if shit got real bad, one MRE/day would keep you going as long as you aren't working hard. IronWing's right though. They aren't as good as they used to be.

*New pull top cans piss me off. They're made for imbeciles too stupid and clumsy to use basic tools. The purpose of canning is long term storage of food. Easy open tops don't keep food as long, and breach at the seam. They shouldn't be a thing.

I think you appreciate them more if you have open say a dozen of them at a time.

Sometimes I give the ferals canned food and use a can opener would be a real pain. Recently I found some 3oz cans. It took 5 of them to fill the 42oz paper bowl.

Snap, snap . . . all done.

I do see your point for long term stability though. And any product that's aimed at the prepareder market should make the containers as robust as possible.

Today's FWP: Microsoft Excel being annoying and converting random things to dates when importing CSV data.

Freaking Bill Gates. (I know he's no longer with Microsoft but it's still his fault 😛)

This didn't happen today yet, but yesterday the bottom of my coffee got cold because I usually don't drink it super fast. This happens a fair bit to me.

Sometimes on night shifts, I forget that I even made a coffee! So I go to make a coffee, and find a full cup of cold coffee sitting there. Usually what happens is I'll get a phone call or something while it's brewing and totally forget about it.

Another problem you may or may not realize is, time moves too fast for us "old" people. I made my favorite concoction today (green tea bag, roughly 40 ml dairy whitener and few grams of instant coffee. no sugar. Rest all hot water and mix. I like the taste), put it next to my mouse, started my usual routine of checking mail etc., touch the cup to see it it's still hot and it was at just the right temp for drinking. I'm like, that was fast! Then look at the time and 15 minutes had passed since I put the hot cup down but my brain was like, no way! Only five minutes have passed!

I like cold coffee. Cold, hot, doesn't matter as long as it's coffee.
Yeah I like cold brew, iced coffee, fraps etc. But if it is supposed to be hot then I want it hot. Anyway, it just happened again :/

Ended up getting two cases of Wornick MREs for $170. Listing said an inspection date of 2025 or better, but the pics showed a date of 2021. Guess I'll see what shows up. Not a huge deal, but it's nice having more breathing room for date.

Aside from the USPS continuing to crap the bed, I got the following note about my trial exam video:
"You will need to move the monitors off the table for the duration of the qualifier and each exam."

I guess I'm going to set up a table in the laundry room? lol. It's tough out there.

GF surprised me with a Monday evening visit, I was in the process of wolfing down a high order of Garlic fries I picked up from this Italian spot. They put like 2,000 crushed cloves and drizzle a bunch of garlic oil on top. Oh and a stupid amount of shaved Parmesan, needless to say, I reeked of Garlic and there was absolutely nothing I could do. Hell, I'm sure I'll still smell like Garlic until Wednesday.

She must be a vampire.

Amex just changed the rules on my savings account. They now may want a 7 day written notice for a withdrawal. Does not fit my definition of a savings account.
