Don't think this would be a first world problem. It's more of a bitch ass bullshit problem. Just as luck would have it I get my new winter parka in the mail and in time for the polar vortex the furnace goes out. I checked the igniter and looks fine. I replaced it 7 years ago. So there is a peep hole in the furnace much like a peep hole in your front door. I looked in there and there is 4 light pulses. So I looked in the service manual and it looks like the four light pulses mean the blower fan isn't working. This would make sense because I didn't hear it start just the main fan (can't remember the name of it) and the blower motor was always making a ping, ping sound like a bad bearing.

It just so happens we had brought in a stray cat back in April and looked and looked for his owner, long story short we found the guy and he couldn't take the cat back, however he works in heating and air conditioning. So we gave him a call and hopefully we hear from him tomorrow before the temperature drops to 15F on Monday.

I just hope I don't have to wear my new winter parka in the freaking house! SHIT!

I was telling stories of my travels this year in a bar tonight and no one seemed impressed. I told them about Las Vegas, the Rose Bowl, Berlin, Oktoberfest in Munich.. nothing interested them. I'm boring.

I'm interested! :) What was Oktoberfest like? Were there a lot of nice looking German blonde dames? :D Did you wear lederhosen?

Where is this polar vortex taking place exactly? I keep hearing about it?

Polar vortex = jet stream dipping south, it does all the things you used to hear that the jet stream did, I think. I'm not a meteorologist.

The 7 day forecast for Chicago isn't that bad. It gets a little cold by Wednesday or Thursday but nothing out of the normal.

Suppose to drop to 15F here Monday night.

Thankfully the HVAC guy called tonight and said he would drop buy in the morning and not even charge us a service call!

-14c here, feels like -19c. There's no polar vortex, it's just called winter. :p Happens every year.
A related first-world problem. Well......a USA problem.

"The part's usable temperature range is -40 - 70C."

- "What is it in Fahrenheit?"

"-40 - 158F."

- "But what about the -40 temperature? You forgot to convert that one."

"The two temperature scales are the same at the -40 point."

- "That can't be right, check it again. They have to be different."

Pro tip... bump the spec so they never coincide. 39C or 41C is close enough to 40C, and it'll give a different number in Fahrenheit. Either that, or tell them to get off their lazy asses, and convert it themselves. It's not like it takes special knowledge or anything.

$100k machine at work: Made in China.
- The service manual is for a previous version of the machine.
- It reads like it was fed directly into Google Translate.
"Screws removal facilitate the up transfer of module of prism."
That means "Remove the screws, then lift up the prism module."
That additionally means "Also remove the other screw that is not shown in the illustration."
- Some pages were simply never translated from Chinese at all.

Maybe. Some specs will require -40C.
There are some people who don't understand ranges either.
"This label says 100-240VAC. I have 120VAC. Will that work?"
Electricians will ask this. o_O

For the most part, no one questions it, or else they're immediately OK with "The two temperatures happen to be the same at -40." Our friendly customers in Canada will of course readily take the Celsius range.

Or LEDs and their viewing angle: A customer spec says that the viewing angle must be 23° and have a certain minimum brightness. It can sometimes take quite a bit of discussion to convince someone that a 30° or 50° viewing angle will satisfy the spec and in fact exceed it. (Some of the specs with weird numbers were written back when certain LEDs were the only options on the market, so that specific option was indirectly written into the spec.)

What is so special about starbucks ? I see them appearing here too, but all i see is over-prized coffee. I do not get it.
I bought their coffee beans. I grind my own. I'd never buy 3 cups of coffee at Starbucks. Their store coffee is too expensive.

I think they became popular cause it's an attractive, good smelling store, and easily found. It was many American's first taste of coffee culture. Overpriced is about right, but there doesn't seem to be any lack of customers.

Walked into Subway on my walk home from work to find that they raised their prices by about $2 a sub almost across the board, making them no longer worth it for the quality. I walked home not only without a sub, but minus 3 minutes of my time. :(

I was curious, so i checked out the website.
I can understand why they are popular.
When it comes to nutrition and calories, they do the thinking for the customer.

I grind my coffee beans too at home. I buy sometimes the Ethiopian coffee beans from AH. Expensive but the taste is very good. Now i have generic coffee beans that were for sale. Taste is less. Another first world problem... My coffee is good but not as good as i would want it to be.

I can't believe how popular Starbucks is in Asia and SE Asia. They love coffee.

In South Korea there are 2-3 coffee stores on every block. The funny thing is they don't drink morning coffee like we do. In fact, the coffee places near me didn't open until 10 am. I'd buy Starbucks black ice coffee in the supermarket so I could drink that in the morning.

In Bangkok, Starbucks was always busy. There was a lot of competition though. I was surprised to find Starbucks in little cities.

Coffee is definitely universal.

The Netherlands. and the one i see daily on the station has been around for a good three years, i guess. I noticed the starbucks shop when i wanted to buy a coffee and saw the prices. I decided it was not worth it.
