Renewed my domain name for another year. Finally got hit directly by the US-CAD exchange rate. Price barely changed in USD compared to last year, but it went up over 30% in CAD -- from $14-ish to $18-ish. Not a big deal considering the site brings in way more than that but still.

Beautiful day today. Sunny, no cloud, a bit windy. Perfect day for a walk but I have to stay in the office to close out all the projects for the fiscal month/year. <sad panda>

Ordered my phone yesterday from Cricket. Today I check the tracking and nothing has been sent! So I call Cricket and ask them why my phone isn't on the way, and connects me to the supervisor. Apparently now my phone will be escalated for shipping today.

So I guess when they say two day free shipping, it means 3+ days. This fucker better be here Friday.

I had a weird one today - problem I mean. For the past several days to a week there has been this odd smell in my tv room but it only existed in about an 8 sq. ft. area. Before that or after that, no smell. Only if you were 'in the zone' did you get a whiff of it.

At first I thought it smelled vaguely like mold or mildew but I wasn't really sure. Then today when I was standing there sniffing like a blood hound I felt a very slight draft on my leg. So I look over in that direction and the only thing suspicious there was the HTPC. Hmmm. So I take a sniff at the back exhaust fan and it's much stronger. But when I sniff the top exhaust which is right next to it just perpendicular, nothing.

So weird. So I blow out the case with some compressed air thinking that maybe too much dust had accumulated and some of it was sublimating into vapor, sort of 'smoldering' to use the term loosely.

But then I noticed that the fan I had pointing at the PSU wasn't working. This isn't a problem in the winter but in the summer, the increase of about 10F degrees makes the PSU flaky. So I sniff the fan and bingo, that's where the smell is. The fan had stopped working and the motor was just heating up and either melting electrical connections or the plastic housing.

This was very disappointing since the fan is only a couple of years old. Sure, it's been running continuously for that time, but come on. Plus, how did I manage to not burn down the entire house with this dodgy fan? I mean on the one hand it makes feel less worried about cheesy Chinese electrical crap since it didn't burst into flames, but at the same time, this was going on for about a week and that could have happened at any time.

I don't mind buying a decent small fan, but you can't even find one that is actually made in a Western country. Not that those can't also be garbage but I'd at least feel better if it had a real rather than fictitious UL tag.

today? tldr;
Sorry. Guess I should have included the summary version.

Weird smell for a week in highly localized area. Think it's mold and I have a leak someplace. Turns out to be the fan supplementing air flow to my PSU on the htpc. Surprised house didn't burn down.

Just glad you're safe. Those old NWN files weren't worth it.

I backed mine up.

No idea what an NWN file is but I don't think the PC was ever in any danger. It was a clip on fan I think I got from Amazon. I have an older Antec case that has a separate compartment for the PSU. Plus the PSU is probably running at more than 2/3 of its rated capacity which apparently can cause premature degradation.

Uh ohs, you probably been sniffing toxic fumes for a while.

Care to share the brand of the fan?

I'm watching my GPU and CPU fans daily in case they die since I've had them for 5-ish years each. Think I overdid my PSU because the fan barely even spins up beyond its base speed.

It says "Massey" on the front label. May have gotten this one at Walmart. It looks like this one at Amazon, just a different brand.

I don't think the fumes were too bad since it was only noticeable downwind of the PC exhaust fan. And of course there was no smoke or anything.

Oh, it's an external, not made for PC fan. That makes me feel better...

You been running that fan 24/7 for years?

P.S. New problem for me: think I got a cold. Woke up with a soar throat. Funny because I've had minimal contact with people for the past few weeks.

You just did....

So you're saying fill the PC with air? I mean keep air in the PC? I have always heard pull, not push...

That's how my PC is setup. Front intake, side and back outflow.

Part A. Subtitle 2- But you know what's so interesting? It's the same idiots that quote me. And those idiots tend to know jack SHIT!

Cell phone store was out of SIM card for the new Nexus phones so I'm going to have to wait until next week to use my new phone.

I've used scissors to convert a regular SIM to a micro-SIM, then again to trim down to nano-SIM.

Multiple times now. It's easy if you're careful.

I've read on XDA that is not working for the Nexus 5x, it needs a particular type of nano SIM. I'm not all that bummed out about it, but it would be nice to have it working so I could decide whether or not I want to keep the phone.
