What first: True AI or a Holodeck (e.g. Star Trek)

A bit of a spinoff form the other thread on AI vs FTL travel.

I think True AI and a Holodeck are possibly in a more realistic time frame given development in VR etc.

Or does one lead to the other?

If memory serves, in Star Trek they didn't have a holodeck until not long before TNG. In the first season they spent time doing upgrades to it, so presumably it existed for some time before then but I'm not sure if it is ever revealed when it was first invented. Skimming Wiki quickly suggests it is never revealed, though could be wrong.

IMO - a non-touch-enabled holodeck is closer than AI, but a holodeck with touch is farther off than AI.

I don't think hard light holograms are going to be a thing for a very long time. Pure VR holodeck yes, that will come before AI. It is kind of already here with Vive since that turns your room into a 'space'.

What is true AI ? Is that where there is no electrical plug servicing the machine ?

VR yeah. AR, maybe. Full Holodeck, nah. I don't think we'll ever be able to achieve true holograms.

I also don't think we'll ever be able to achieve true AI. Pretty good AI, sure, but not real AI. Although I love the concept of Jane from Ender's Game, especially as she evolved over the years.
